Apple IIgs

I recently tried to hook up my Apple IIgs, and whenever it tries to boot, it gives me the error "08ff" regarding the sound interrupt. Any suggestions about where to start to correct this problem?

IIGS, Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

You get this complaint when GS/OS is trying to boot, right? What if you turn the machine on and sit on the 8 key - will it boot to the BASIC prompt?

The basic prompt loads fine but GS/OS won't boot.

Ok, either the software or the hardware has degraded over time. Do you have a GS/OS install/boot diskette you could start from, separate from how you're booting now? That would tell you if the current (I assume hard drive?) boot image you have is somehow corrupted or if your sound chip has gone haywire.

Same problem when trying to boot from GS/OS boot disk. Is there any way to disable the sound chip?

No, but you can poke at it with the control panel. Hit Ctrl-OpenApple-Esc and it'll come up. Hit enter on "Control Panel," then hit the down arrow to select "Sound." From there, you can use the arrow keys to test the volume and pitch. You might try booting with the volume all the way down.

knoumt01,

Have you tried disassembling the machine, removing cards and cleaning the contacts to see if you have bad connections?
