Sony DSR-11 Repair in NYC

If someone could point me in the right direction I have several decks here that I need repaired. The problem with the decks is the 4-pin FW connections get burned out all the time. B&H have been doing repairs but they have become unreliable to my needs.

I don't want to have to ship the decks anywhere. Something local in NYC is what I am looking for.

I had my dsr-11 repaired at abel cinetech. They only needed to do a head cleaning and lubrication. Anything more complicated, they sent it out. If that's not good enough for you, someone recommended some low end place in the way west 30s or 40s that serviced them. Post back and I'll make a few calls.

Hello Michael,
Thanks for the input. For me it's always replacing the Firewire input card. I forget what B&H charges me. I think in the neighborhood of $50-$80. Optimally I would like to stay in that price range. I have a dozen decks that need to be looked at. Anything you can find out would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again for your time.

SoCal,

I also have a Sony DSR-11 that needs repair. The Tape will not eject and the fan keep turning on and off.

Did you use the place in NYC? If so, would you recommended them?

fwiw, Abel Cinetech was able to get a jammed tape out of my dsr-11 a few years ago. I'm sure they're more expensive than the place previously mentioned, but they are reliable and have a good reputation.

I haven't been able to use this facility yet as I'm cutting through the red tape at my school. I don't know Michael personally (he recommended them) but I have seen much of the great advice he gives on this forum. For that reason I would feel comfortable using them. He did make another suggestion above to help you with a stuck tape and possibly save some money over the previous place.

Thanks for the compliment, but I have never used that place. Others recommended them. I have no personal experience. I have used AbelCinetech for repairs, sales and rentals and they've always been reliable. Not the cheapest though.

I have a sony DSR11 that I had to have the firewire chip replaced, I was told by the tech @ the repair center as well as the sony tech, the chip gets burned out when the vcr is turned on before the computer, I was told that the DSR11 is more prone to the chip being burned out.

The procedure is, first turn on the computer on and then the vcr.

I had a power down situation for a short moment, and the vcr was not connected to the battery backup system but the computer was, soon after the power came back on, I lost VTR control, no more firewire connection, I did lots of research and I fount many similar situations, it is a costly repair.

I now am more careful.

I just used Technical Operations in NYC to repair my Sony DSR-11 deck. I thought it was unrepairable. But they fixed it in one day for $368. Which is a lot cheaper than buying a new deck. Very satisfied, Thanks for the recommendation.
