why can't I burn a CD via iTunes?

Hello. I have Windows XP and use the current iTtunes 8.1. I've had iTunes for over a year & never had a problem before. NOW I can't burn through iTunes. When I open a Playlist then click the BURN tab on lower right, I get an error message: "Disc burner or software not found." I can still burn iTunes songs using Nero (it's the cd-burner that comes with Gateway 838GM). But why can't I burn anymore using iTunes? The Playlists will play on the computer, no problem. Also no problem downloading on iTunes. I checked iTunes "Updates" and it comes back saying the 8.1 version is already current. Any ideas? Do I need to delete iTunes entirely and start all over? Thanks for your help.

Do you get a message box when starting up iTunes that says:
Warning! The registry settings used by the ITunes drivers for importing and burning CDs & DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
I am having the same problem my iTunes won't burn a CD, but I can burn CD's in Nero, and Media Player. Not sure what is going on, the old iTunes I had no problem with?

Resetting the Nero BurnRights has worked for a lot of people with Windows XP, but not for Vista. In the Tools folder of Nero you should find Nero BurnRights. Run that and click the "Reset Burn Rights" button and restart.

If that doesn't work, some people seem to have luck with editing the registry or messing with filters or gear drivers. Check out this discussion starting with Tytus (he came up with the Nero fix) on March 22:

If you don't have Nero, check out the about thread too. I think some people have found a way to get just the Burn Rights program.

Hope this helps!

Thanks to everyones help I have resolved the problem I was having, and can now burn cd's in iTunes again. I did have to add UpperFilters folder to my registry and edit in GEARAspiWDm, I also found a CD/DVD update on the Sony webstite for my computer that did say needed for iTunes. This got rid of the error message when starting up iTunes about registry settings. Then I got a message could not find burning software could not burn CD's yet until I reset Nero Burn Rights as in the reply above. It took a lot of searching and this is the first time I have been in the registry, but hopefully this can help someone else having the same problem.

I solved this problem on my Windows XP by resetting the burn rights with Nero, but this does not seem to work for Vista.

I have seen some posts from people with Vista that say there are 32 bit and 64 bit version of itunes. Here's one: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9310708#9310708. They seem to have success when they update to the 64 bit version I believe.

I have Vista on my laptop and it is burning fine with itunes version 8.0.2.20. I'm afraid to update it and didn't even know there was a choice of 32/64 bit.
