intermittent color shift or color fade when scrolling

In the last two weeks my Macbook has been having odd color shifts when scrolling (any app, plus finder windows). When I scroll or move through folders in the finder, colors fade to neutrals or black and white. Happens scrolling both up and down or left to right. Called Apple and walked through zapping PRAM and VRAM, didn't solve it. Had an early morning appointment at Genius bar, and couldn't reproduce it. After working 2 hours, it's back. Screenshots uploaded at ftp://8stars.org/gwen/troubleshoot I'm connected to a Dell external, but color shift happens when not connected as well. Thanks for any help...

Hi,

the same problem here on my Macbook Pro (also some 2 years old - probably JUST out of warranty 😉 ):
Colors usually fade to complete black.
If marked - to copy etc. - colors come back.
Also if I quit the app and do the same again, colors come back.
The fading seems to appear only when working for quite a while.
Not funny, and not easily reproducable.
Apps so far: Safari, Finder, Mail.

Regards

Martin

Yes, me too. It's done it since brand new on my MacBook Pro 15".

Many, many people are seeing this fault -- hundreds if not thousands. In my case it seems to be somehow related to going into standby then waking up again -- especially if I use an external display for a while, then sleep, then return to the built-in, and/or the other way around.

Rebooting the machine ALWAYS fixes the problem completely. It stays OK for a while (sometimes days), then returns.

Also, it's definitely NOT a video hardware problem. I proved this by taking screen snapshots. The snapshot image shows the stuffed up colors and artifacting problems even on another computer.

See here for before scroll: http://cybermedix.co.nz/misc/before-scroll.png
And here for after scroll: http://cybermedix.co.nz/misc/after-scroll.png

The problem is very obvious, no? That was scrolling back and forth an inch or two about ten times to make the problem really bad. The more you scroll up and down, the worse it gets.

I can also confirm that it doesn't matter in what manner the display is scrolled, or what application is being scrolled. Mouse wheel, Scroll Slide-bar, Firefox, Safari -- it happens everywhere, through any means of scrolling.

Also, in general, if one selects all the affected text then deselects, the colors return to normal -- further evidence that hardware is not the cause.

And given the way the artifact (pixel aliasing/pixelation) occurs, along with the varying color distortion, depending on original color -- I'd be willing to bet it's something to do with the anti-aliasing code somewhere in the graphics engine -- probably at a pretty low level, since it affect everything, everywhere [when the problem is occurring -- recall that for me it seems to only occur after sleep/wake cycles and/or having used or using an external display.]

Ah ha! I just found a way to correct (that is, get around) this problem without having to reboot.

If you go to System Preferences, Appearance, then change (I think) the font smoothing option to something else, then back to Automatic (in my case) -- then quit and relaunch any applications already running -- the problem goes away!

[ I say "I think", because I also changed "Sue smooth scrolling" and and changed the "Disable smoothing for font blah or smaller" setting -- but changed everything back to how it was after closing System Prefs and coming back to do so. I did have to restart Firefox for the fault to go away -- but a fresh load of Safari was immediately fixed. ]

This pretty much confirms my "bet" in the other post here that there's a bug in the anti-aliasing code in some lowish level part of the graphics engine. I do hope Apple find and fixes it soon as this issue has been bugging me for two years now!
