Carbon Copy Cloner Problem: Can't see my Macs HD when selecting Target Disk

I cannot find an answer anywhere on the net, so I'm trying the trusty Apple Discussions forums. Using Carbon Copy Cloner, I backed up everything onto an external HD and I erased everything from my G5 and reinstalled the software it came with. I then also reinstalled Tiger OS X and now, using CCC, I chose all the original backed up volume from my external HD as my Source Disk, but when I try to save them back onto my G5's HD, I cannot see my Macintosh HD under CCC's Target Disk options. ( Note: I recently did exactly the same thing with my iBook using CCC and I was able to see the iBook's HD under CCC's Target Disk options without any problems).

More info: I'm trying to do an Incremental backup, though I tried the "Backup everything" option too (which, incidentally, would defeat the purpose of erasing and reinstalling) just to see if my Macintosh HD would show up under the Target Disk, but it still didn't.

I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me how to get my Macintosh HD to appear under my Target Disk options on CCC. Thx.

Hi,

Could it be that the drive that the copy of CCC that you're running is also the drive you want to restore to? I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think that CCC would show the current startup drive as a destination drive, as initializing it for a destination would be impossible, as it's containing the currently-running version of the operating system. When I've used CCC, I've run it from a partition or drive separate from the source and destination drives. I'm not even sure if CCC can use its own host drive as the source, at least for a perfect clone, as some OS files change during use, and making a static snapshot for cloning would be difficult.

Hope this helps,

Ken

Ken,
Thanks for answering so swiftly. If I understood your question correctly, I was running CCC from my G5's Desktop. However, using your advice, I closed and deleted the CCC application that I was running from my G5 and I opened another copy of CCC that I had on a separate, partitioned volume (where I backed up my iBook using CCC) on the same External HD I'm using. Still, when I looked for my *Macintosh HD* under Target Disk in CCC, it wasn't an option.

Thanks for all of the responses. I'm somewhat of a novice when it comes to backing up and other Mac-related issues, but I was able to figure out what I was doing wrong on my own: Instead of first booting from my external HD, I was trying to use CCC by simply opening it on my PowerMac G5 and that is why I couldn't see my Mac's HD under 'Target Disk.' As soon as I booted from the volume I had partitioned and created on my ext. HD, I was able to select my Mac's HD just fine.
