Sony Camera/USB to Firewire?

We just got a Sony DCR-TRV480 videocamera to transfer some of the movies from back when the kids were little. The camera came with a USB cable.

I apologize for the moronic question, but iMovie will only take Firewire. Is there such a thing as a USB to Firewire adapter? Does anybody know where I could find one?

Thanks.

IMovie accepts Firewire only. Do not bother with the USB port.
To be clear:

The DCR-TRV480 has USB, Firewire and A/V out ports that are located underneath a dark gray port cover on the edge of the right side.
You may have to buy a firewire cable that has different connectors at each end, just as suggested. But you do have access to firewire. In case you can, you should return the camera and go directly to a DVvideo camera. Hi8 is dead end and dying.

Hello again!
Mr Zeldin may be right? but millions of people already have a 8mm camera and thousend of those are broken! It can be VERY difficult to transfere your old movies to a newer dv medium. You can still buy digitaltapes for trv´s years from now, and your kids(grandkids?) can use the camera to play with. That way kids learn alot just in time for HDdv launching fulltime in 5 years time or so.You can also lend out your trv to other needy relatives who soon will need to do somethings with theyr old tapes. But remember to go digital from nowon.

I speak from personal experience, someone I know made 50 movies in late 80s early 90s then interest dabbed of. sometimes tragedy strikes and u want to see people again then u have to find a camcorder that works or Borrow on THEN if u cant find one U hawe to use hardearned money and bye one.Make dvbackups and keep elswere in a vault in future. Now go make more movies!!!! Gwt! Ivar......

Greg, Ivar ( my not so young padovan;-) )....

the basic concept of such a forum as this one is, that EVERYBODY is allowed to share her/his knowledge and experience...

Greg, you had some trouble with my replies on your postings, and Ivar made his experiences with me too ... ;-))

learning the rules is a neverending process.. even for me ;-)) ... I allow me to ignore some postings, but I wouldn't recommend to ignore someone....

Ivar:

Even with your broken (but understandable) English, I see your point! Letting the children play with the older camera to learn is right on track!!

Our children use older cameras too and I simply transfer them to DV for imovie and then let them make their own creations (some are better than many I have rented!!)

Yes-GWT!!

Karsten,

Ivar's reply was off-topic and had nothing to do with the original post. The woman needed connection help, she did not need lecture, and neither do I. In America we'd say you are the pot calling the kettle black. It means you are doing the thing you are complaining about yourself.

If we owe anything to the people on this board, it is to not waste their time.

My thoery is this: share knowledge when you have it, stay off the thread if you don't have anything productive to say.

Hello again!
This is a reply mr Z! I did reply to the first topic! As I understand it a Ilnk is exaktly the same as a 4wire, however reading the manual will tell people what is what- were on the TRV-480 and to the demise of hi 8 corders this may be the last year on produsing corders made for 8mm`and hi 8 from nowon only digital counts. I live in a contry were moviemaking is done around big famelyocasions like Crismas and 17May and of course birthdays Themes well worth memorizing. And to the topic of HD movie making! the same vill happen to minidv cameras sooner than you think! You should already now get a dvcorder and keep in a box
just in case. I totaly agree that rules should be followed on disc site and will try not to hurt anybodys feeling mutc in the future, however never underestimate the power of the force people are tuffer than you believe. European humor can somtimes be a litle dificult to understand even for Europeeans
