Question

Problems burning dual layer DVD's

we have had lots of problems trying to burn dual layer dvd's. Single layer has been fine but is there some secret trick for getting dual layer to work? we have tried both the internal dvd burner and an external one and both are supposed to be dual layer capable.

Powermac G4/466 (upgraded to dual 1.4GHz), Macbook pro 1.83GHz, ipod nano 3G, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Could you tell us what type of "problems?"

The few times I've made DL, I create a disk image and then use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn the disk image at 2X speed.

about half of the ones we try get about half way through and then say media sense error (or similar wording) some of the others look like they have burned fine and then when it is writing the last little bit it just stops, this results in discs which are unreadable. The others look like they've burned fine and then don't play one of the items on the DVD once it is put in the machine.
Those that do play appear to stop about the level of the switch of layers.

Those DLs are too expensive to turn them into coasters... Tell iDVD to burn the disk directly at 2x or 1X. Preferences/Advanced and select speed at the bottom of that window.

What brand and format DVD DL are you using?

I think I had a warning the first time I created a DL disk image, but never again; and never a problem creating or burning to Verbatim DVD+R DL at 2X.

Thanks for the "hello." Been busy and spending two weather-perfect weeks in Arizona. Snow in Chicago area last night... 😟

Tried your last suggestion. it goes through all the preps ... hours! Gets to multiplexing and burning... full blue bar , says its done, Time remaining about one minute. but fails to burn the disk!
we have tried creating a disk image and burning that in Toast but with no success either.

Which computer are you using? Do you have at least 20GB of free space on the internal hard drive?

Macbook pro. 2.4GHz 120Gb free on internal HD. OSX (10.5.6) , 2Gb RAM.
burner is MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-867.

More information for you. Movies were made using final cut express HD (latest version) and put together using iDVD6.

Why are you in the iDVD '08 (iDVD v. 7.x) forum?

How long is the movie? Have you made shorter (SL) movies in FCE HD that worked fine? Are you exporting out of FCE HD and then bringing into iDVD?

I stand corrected we are using iDVD7
I've done Loads of video using FCE HD and they all work fine
its only once the DVD starts to get beyond the length for a single layer that I get problems. It wont do dual layers. The video itself goes from FCE HD and then I make sure it is widescreen in QT pro before putting it into iDVD it works fine on the single layer stuff but not the dual.

Have you tried making a disk image and then burning the DL (Double-layer) disk?

The brand is Elite M DVD+R DL 8X. I hadn't spotted that question! Yes we have tried making a disc image which works fine from the HD but it fails when burning to DL disk.

Now we're getting somewhere. 🙂

Dump those disks and buy Verbatim DVD+R DL. Burn the disk image at 2X or 1X speed. Always works for me.
