Help iPhone speakers distortion

Hello,

My iPhone 3G has always been working wonderfully until a few days ago...I often use speakerphone during calls, but now suddenly when I switch speakerphone on, there is a loud distortion and the caller´s voice is breaking up, making calls impossible. The speaker works perfectly when using iPod and I can make calls successfully without the speakerphone and also with headphones. Is this a software or hardware problem? Anyone had the same issue?

If the speaker works fine during iPod playback then it is not a hardware issue. Try resetting the phone:

Hold the home and sleep buttons until the iPhone powers off - do not use the red slider that will appear. Once powered off, reboot the phone. You will not loose any data or settings in this process.

If that does not work, restore the iPhone in iTunes.

I tried resetting the iPhone and also restoring the iPhone through iTunes, to no avail...still distortion in the speakers when I talk on the phone. Any other ideas?

FYI - the iPhone includes a single speaker.

If an iPhone reset and a restore with iTunes does not resolve it, if you are in the U.S. you can call AppleCare at (800) 694-7466, or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

Thanks for the help...I was hoping this was not a hardware issue but it seems like it is. I called the nearest Apple retail store in italy but they do not deal with iPhones, so I will have to call Apple when I am back in Italy. Thanks anyway for the help!
