In my Router System Settings under Wireless Network Security, Authentcation it says WEP-open, and Encryption is WEP is this ok or is something else better?
My choices under Authentication are WEP-Shared, WPA-PSK, WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK, WPA2-PSK.
Is it just a matter using the pull down menu and selecting another option or is there more to it.
I'm not very computer savvy so i'm afraid this might be a little over my head.

Hi

I recommend you use WPA2-PSK. You should have two options there - Personal and Enterprise. You should choose Personal. You will then need to enter your password of choice. Make sure it's long enough to be secure - at least 8 characters is good. It's actually not a bad idea to write it on a post-it and tape it to your router.

WEP is an old, insecure wireless encryption that is relatively easy to hack. WPA2 is much more modern and secure.

Your Macbook will automatically detect the type of encryption you've used on your router.

No, once you change the router settings and apply a new password, you will need to log in to the wireless network afresh (if you already had an unprotected wireless network with the same name, for example) from each computer, but the Macs, at least (probably the PCs too) will automatically show you that it's a WPA2 Personal network. (Don't worry too much if you see "WPA" rather than "WPA2", though.)

It's not that they'll "automatically update", but they will recognise whether they're seeing a WEP or WPA-protected network. Once you change the router settings, go to each computer, go to their wireless setting page (on the Mac, use the Airport menu; on the PC, go to the wireless signal icon in the taskbar), connect to your new network, and enter the password you've chosen.

It really is pretty straightforward. Try it out, and if it doesn't work, come back and let us know what happened.
