Kernel panic help

My iMac g5, 1.8ghz had it's power supply die.
It had been on the way out (couldn't sleep and wake) but I waited until it was totally dead.
So I bought one from Apple Palace, supposedly new from Apple.
Installed it, restored my hard drive from the back up (it had a kernel panic as the PS was dying) and it ran Ok for a couple of days.

Then it had another kernel panic, where it gives me the gray box saying I have to restart.

I have tried an alternate keyboard, still panics.
ran rember and the ram passed 3 tests (when I could get it to boot long enough)

One thing it does almost every time I can get it to boot is there are lines of pixels running vertically.

Right now I can't get it to boot to the 10.4 install disk I have.
I don't have the original disks, so I can't run the hardware test.

I have run through these suggestions:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

Couldn't check firmware since I haven't had it boot long enough without crashing. (but it was running for months before the power supply failed)

It did boot for a short while after I reformatted and installed a fresh OS 10.4 again. But that eventually panicked too.

I do have two of the logs from panics that I could save.

Any thoughts?

Did I get another bad power supply?

Thanks for any tips.

Hi,

i noticed your post only today. sorry for the problems you have.
if i understand well, you changed the PSU against another new one. Did you check the behaviour of the LEDs on the Logic board? Probably you know about this, but here is the Apple link:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2831

also, you might want to check whether you iMac LB and PSU are subject to the typical failure of the G5 family: leaking capacitors. Here is a website which helped me:

http://jimwarholic.com/2008/11/apple-imac-g5-power-supply-issues-and.php

check the capacitors on the LB, and also those in the PSU. If they look bad (for comparison, have a look at the pictures in jim warholic's page) they might be the source of your problems.

I am not able to replace capacitors, but adding one to the 3V pins of the PS cured my problems.

Oh, i must add: kernel problems hint to the LB rather than to the PSU. but the basic problem, bad (underdimensioned) capacitors is the same in both cases.

Hope this helps

Thomas

Hi, Jeff,

Kernel panics is usually a LB problem. and if the led's look ok, then the PS might be not the cause. (though i had it that only the first LED was on, and apple says, that it is the LB, and not the PS, but in my case it was the PS...)

your case is a bit puzzling since you started with an aging PS, and after replacing the PS, you got the kernel panics. but i'm sorry, i'm not good on this subject...

i suggest you try to post again, or try to search this forum for KP.

hope you find a solution.

Thomas
