I cannot remove old version of itunes nor install new version. I need help

Here's the fix. The problem is because you're trying to install the program NOT as an administrator.

When you download the latest version of iTunes, save it to a folder on your PC. Then you can close your browser, navigate to the saved folder, _RIGHT CLICK_ on the iTunesSetup.exe file and click *Run as administrator*.

I am having the exact same problem and have tried everything. The funny thing is though that I can click on a song directly and it will open up in itunes but that is the only way I can use itunes at the moment... Any info would be awesome, cheers

So glad I'm not alone - I may have deleted something from my computer that was needed for iTunes, and now I can't access it, uninstall it or re-install it. It's driving me crazy! If anyone can help with this, it would be very much appreciated!

I tried that but it still didn't work. It says the older version of iTunes can't be removed, but Add/Remove Programs doesn't work because it says that it needs to know the program that created it. I do have QuickTime so I don't know what program it's referring to. Does anyone know another way to uninstall the old iTunes program?

I am at my wits end I have been unable to import cd's for the last few months. I have done all that I have been advised and still nothing. All the songs are 789 minutes long. I have purchased a new hard drive, dvd/cd player and had it reformatted nothing. Apple just don't seem to care either. Please help!

I have exactly the same problem...Windows remove program worked for quicktime, but didnt for itunes it tries to find itunes.msi in C:\DOCUME~1\Steve\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP216.TMP\..I do have it but it is in c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\apple compuers\installer cache\itunes 7.6.2.9\itunes.msi so I put that in and it tells meits not a valid installtion package...SO i went and tried to manually delete itunes files...but it wont let me delete ITDtector.ocx as it;s being used!! and cant delete quicktime as CFCharactersetbitmaps cannot be deleted....I cant use my new nano because I have to get the ****** pc to use version 8...so I'm stuffed...I read the windows cleaner utility and used it...no luck...Cant get rid of the old version, cant install new version...any solutions out there?

You probably need to use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility.

Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime (the one without iTunes)

Save the files on your PC.

Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program. The installer doesn't give any message to confirm the installation.

Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:

*If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry*, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.

When you get to deleting Quicktime files in the system32 folder as advised in the method, you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.

Restart your PC.

Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)

Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.

If you don’t see an entry for one of the programs that did not uninstall, look out for blank entries or numeric entries that look like version numbers e.g. 7.x for Quicktime or 1.x for Bonjour.

restart your PC

Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.

If it does, install iTunes.
