Problems with Lacie 2big network attached storage hard disk

I purchased the Lacie 2big network attached storage on the advice from the Mac store in london that it would be compatible. However I have not been able to get it to work. Whilst I can access the drive using the Lacie IP configurator software which was supplied with it (eg to create users and shares) - proving that the connections are working ok - I am unable to mount the lacie drive in Finder so am unable to use it at all at the moment. In Finder under Go / Connect to Server... I am able to log into the drive using my user name and password but at the next step "Select Volumes to Mount" the options are blank.

Do I need to format or configure or initialize the Lacie in any way in order to be able to us it with my Powerbook?

Help much appreciated. I have emailed the Lacie help function but have not been able to get a response.

Thanks

Powerbook G4 15", Mac OS X (10.4.11)

For most hard drives, you do need to format and partition the drive before you can use it, using disk utility (on your internal hard drive in applications/utilities).

If the drive is powered by USB-only from your Powerbook, you need to get more power to it. One failure mode of a USB-powered drive is that it doesn't work completely. Add an external power supply, or a second USB cable, or plug it into a powered USB hub.

Hi, I have a 2big Network as well and I get it managed to use it as a Time Machine backup volumen - works from 3 Macs right now. I didn't re-format the drive - just used it out of the box. However I don't see an icon on my desktop but I can access it via the Leopard sidebar where it is shown under shared drives.
I also see the drive twice under shared drives - one is the shared drive I setup in the Lacie Drive Manager to get Time Machine to work - the other is named "Lacie-2big (Time Machine)" - which I can't access and can't logon either.

So I am a bit unsure if I setup everything the right way?!
What are your experience so far?

Thanks!

I picked up a 2big network a few days ago (to replace two Buffalo LinkStation Pros) and also have not been able to get an icon for the drive to appear on my mac desktop, despite being able to access the 2big through "Connect to Server." I hope to learn more from LaCie.

A successful workaround I'm using is to put the contents of each share on the 2big drive into a single folder in the share, make an alias of the folder in the share, and drag/copy the alias to the desktop of any machine needing access to the share. Admittedly a little kludgy, but easy to disseminate once set up. The desktop alias calls up the respective folder quite crisply, tested now for several machines on the network -- at least with up to ~40 Gb in a given folder/share so far. For reference, this network currently has 6 Mac and 3 Win XP nodes.
