Can an Iphone be used as an Itouch?

I was wondering if I got an Iphone, if I have to have a plan, or use it as a phone right away or at all.

Also, why is an Iphoen cheaper then the Itouch if and Iphone has more features?

The company which offers the plan subsidizes the cost of the iPhone. This isn't true for the iPod touch.

If you're in the USA, you must purchase an unlimited $30/mo data plan on top of your minutes plan. The iPhone can do as much as and more than the Touch... see www.apple.com for comparisons. The iPhone is cheaper to purchase because it's subsidized by AT&T, thus the required data plan.

Assuming you are in the US, the cost of an iPhone without a two year commitment is $599/$699. A iPod Touch will be much cheaper if you don't want the phone/data service.

I know I read somewhere you can buy an iPhone directly from the Apple Store without an AT&T plan, but I'm not sure if that's now, or not. Plus, you won't be able to use it as a phone without an AT&T plan if you're in the US, unless you hack it to do so, which is not allowed to be discussed on these boards.

If you are in the U.S., you can buy an iphone without a plan for $599/$699. However, none of the features will wok until you activate it with a plan.

In most places the iphone is subsidized, meaning that the cellular service provider pays for part of the iphone in exchange for a 1 month to 3 year plan.

AT&T recently started selling the iPhone 3G at a no-contract price. The sales price for an Phone 3G without a contract is $599 for the 8GB, and $699 for the 16GB. The iPhone is still carrier locked with AT&T with the only difference being there is no contract. Activation with AT&T is required at the store when purchased. This is for pay-as-you-go customers which the iPhone 3G wasn't available for up until recently, or for a post paid subscriber who doesn't want a contract.
