Burn Failure due to "laser level" being off: external drive

I have just recently purchased an Optorite USB 2.0 Slim DVD burner with capabilities of RW. I am using an iMac G4 with OS X (10.4.2). I usually use a D-Link USB Hub to connect several other things to my iMac because of the lack of USB ports located in the back of my dome. I was told by a rep. at Apple Support that there is probably a failure of either power or loss of power because it is going through my Hub. He suggested that I hardwire it to my iMac. I did so and the same message appeared. Something along the lines of calibration error due to laser level. He also said that if the external burner was not compatible with the iMac that I am using than it wouldn't recognize it as a drive or even pick it up on the system but I did some more research on my particular model and found out, according to Newegg.com that it is not supported by the Mac platform. I am confused as to what I need to do. If buying a new burner, one that is generally used for Macs then I will do so but I would like to ensure that it will not work whatsoever. I have been troubled by this compatibility issue for too long now and am willing to do whatever it takes to resolve the issue. I would so greatly appreciate any feedback there is on my problem. Thanks in advance for everyones consideration and time spent helping me out.
