Sep 19, 2011 3:12 PM in response to Crumasby jad000,Brilliant! Thank you Crumas.
My home button was acting very unreliably - 1 push and the multitasking bar would come up, 2 pushes and I would be at the search screen. Never the same response two times in a row. I was starting to get annoyed and assumed it was a mechanical/hardware issue (and not due to the last firmware update, as some suggested in other posts).
A little burst of air while holding down the home button fixed it.
Dust is everywhere and unavoidable and I can much happier accepting the idea of dust getting into these openings then thinking the hardware failed.
I was also getting a warning that my dock was not optimised for charging my iPhone...that seems to be resolved too. Dust must have been inhibiting some of the pins from making contact correctly.
For what its worth...and i am glad the alcohol did work for some...it's just a very dangerous thing to introduce any liquid into the device. It will instantly void your warrenty and unless you want to buy a new phone it will be a costly repair to fix the collateral damage eevn if the primary issue got fixed incidentally.
Thanks to all for their helpful input here and all the advice.

Nov 10, 2011 7:12 AM in response to tonybeyondoby pooky17,I definitely would NOT do this unless you are willing to risk it.
I did last night and now my wifi is broken.
My home button works great, but now I have to replace my iPod. Yayy

Nov 19, 2011 12:41 PM in response to tonybeyondoby Chuck1947,You are a genius! I can't believe anyone would put this idea down. They should have simply suggested that you use pure alcohol (technically that's what you recommended, you just didn't use the word pure). I had some 91% in the cabinet and it worked like a charm. Why would anyone do this anyway if the phone is still under warranty? I guess common sense is a scarce commodity these days.
As far as being a temporary fix, if it works at all, it indicates that something foreign is interfering with the button's normal operation and you should just repeat the cure with pure alcohol.
Thanks a bunch!

Nov 24, 2011 12:36 PM in response to tonybeyondoby whoa010696,ok, hold down the sleep/wake button. When the power off slide pops out continue holding the sleep/wake button but also start holding down the home button until the device turns off. hope that works :D

Nov 26, 2011 1:21 PM in response to tonybeyondoby alexandrum,i confirm it worked for me too.
Before trying the rubbing alcohol, the button didn't work at all and the click was not present.
I had to insist about 5 minutes and I've pourred 3-4 drops of alcohol.
Now it works, although there's still no click.

Dec 18, 2011 12:57 AM in response to tonybeyondoby pinkythepink,Just wanting to throw in my post that the original solution works!
I have a 4th gen Touch. My button has been slowly being less and less responsive for months now, and I'm not surprised as I've had it for a year and use it every day. Blowing into the charge port wasn't helping but I did try for a solid half hour before the light-headedness was getting to me.
I used Witch Hazel for my pod. Just applied it to a QTip and started rubbing it into the button in circles. Soon enough the button became responsive again and now it works fine! Not as goodas it was when it was brand new, but working and not frustrating me now! Also paid attention to the comments already here: made sure to hold it vertical as to not risk my screen.
Thank you so much for posting this solution!
