Can you modify an existing Keynote theme?

you'll want to extract the background from the .key file first:

#1 right click on your .key file and see if you can view package contents. if you can't, dupe the file and add .zip at the end, then double click it, it'll expand. THEN you can view the package contents.

#2 look for the background image that should be inside the package.

#3 open that in PSD and do what you need to it.

#4 replace the file in the package (same name and file format), OR, open the file in Keynote and go to each master slide, and choose your new image as the background using the Inspector (don't simply drag the image in or it won't be a true background).

Obviously you can save the theme as a new theme so all of your work will be on the new theme and keep the original pristine. Then, if the theme you want to copy has 'blank' slide, you can screen capture it and edit the file in photoshop, then edit the masters and put in your new background.

There are other ways you can achieve what you want.

1. Overlay a shape filled with white and given some transparency.

2. Give your logo a glow to separate it from the background.

3. Put the logo in a shape that has a pale background possibly faded.

4. Create a blurred white bitmap patch to use behind the logo and give that some transparency.

I am sure you can think of other combinations that will do what you want as you know better what that is.
