virtual pc

I have bought a virtual pc 6 with XP windows andI can't install on my Mac.Message:must install on os extended volume.I have partitioned my disc and created an extended vol. Virtual PC does not recognize it. Virtual insists on having an extended volume to install. I am a beginner and probably naive.

Mine runs in 10.5.6. I don't know if the installer works with 10.5, but the program does. I know it is not supported in 10.5, but it does run.

Is that error coming from Virtual PC or is it coming from Windows?
Can you install it on the main partition? Why did you partition it for Virtual PC? Virtual PC just creates a disk image that it uses for the Windows virtual machine; so, if you can install on the main partition, then I don't see a need for the partition at all.

If your reason for running XP is compatibility with specific data formats, check this FAQ* on compatible data formats for Macs:

http://www.macmaps.com/crossplatform.html

As well as http://guide.apple.com/
Before trying to get install any emulator.

A few terms when it comes to running Windows on Macs:

Emulation -> allows the full chip of an Intel to be simulated by software.

Virtualization -> Allows an Intel operating system environment to be created that runs natively on an Intel chip.

WINE (Windows is not an emulator) -> allows the Mac to give just enough code for most executables to run thinking Windows is in their background when in reality it isn't.

Swapfile -> An area of space within your any operating system environment dedicated for simulating chip memory when not enough physical chip memory is present.

Emulators for PowerPC:

http://www.openosx.com/wintel/index.html
http://www.iemulator.com/
http://www.kju-app.org/kju/
http://www.lismoresystems.com/

Open DarWINE for PowerPC:
http://darwine.sourceforge.net/download.php

Your G4 is too slow for XP. The best you can hope to achieve is Windows 2000 or ME emulation with 512 MB of RAM, and 5 GB assigned to the swapfile of your Windows environment. At that you'll find any games that require GPU specific acceleration, or audio chip access will barely run if at all. Only virtualization environments offer enough power to access GPU or audio chip functions natively.

G5 minimum is required for XP, and that needs 1 GB of RAM, and at least 10 GB of room for the Windows swapfile.

Virtual PC cannot be legally downloaded from anywhere (updaters may still be available, but not the base installer). Though Microsoft no longer sells VPC, they've never released it to public domain. If you want Virtual PC 7, you'll need to find someone who is willing to sell their copy.

Note that even if you find a copy, it will not run on your MacBook nor on any other Intel-based Mac.
