XDCam (like its little brother, HDV) is an Open GOP MPEG-2 format and QuickTime doesn't really like Open GOP formats. Capturing to/importing them is fine, but exporting within the FCP/QT ecosystem (to the best of my knowledge) isn't possible.

So, when exporting movies out of FCP as HDV or XDCam, FCP converts those Open GOP files to closed GOP. In other words, no reference movies since FCP/QT is actually converting the files a bit, resulting in the extended processing time and full-length movies.

if you force render clips or selections within your edit then you can indeed create a reference movie that references those renders ... but it hardly makes for an appealing workflow unless force rendering as you go along is your cup of tea, might as well just export self contained movie at the end really.

I'll second Andy's suggestion.
