Do you have installed or have you used (with 10.4) a 3rd party fax program? If so, that and the OS X fax server, competing for control of the modem, may have disabled the modem. I ran into this with FaxStf, & ended up having to just drop FaxStf. In fact, to get the modem reset & usable, I had to reinstall (archive-install) Panther before reinstalling Tiger, somehow just reinstalling (archive-install) Tiger didn't do it.
Out of the blue, I can't get on the web using my internal modem. I get this message: "Could not open the communications device." I can still get on using airport, but would like to fix this. I've looked into System Preferences/networlking and it looks like everything is configured correctly.

Hi Vicki,
Negative on the fax software. I don't run any fax software at all, as I have a separate fax machine I use exclusively.

Hi again,
Have you tried Network Diagnostics? Under System Preferences > Network > Assist Me, and select diagnostic, follow the prompts from there. If something is incorrectly set or not set up, this will usually find & fix it. I've been looking around for other possible answers, but haven't found what I think I'm looking for yet. Perhaps also try opening Internet Connect (in Applications) and going to "Help" in that. And I'm still looking, too.

I, also am having a problem with my internal modem... the message says "no dial tone detected. Please check phone line connection and try again". I am attached to that phone line now with my old i-Mac so I know the phone line is OK. Has anyone else dealt with this problem?
Vicki-
Tried that straight away. It was unable to correct the problem.

DID ANYONE SOLVE THAT PROBLEM?
On a 17" PB, running OS 10.4.2 Tiger. I am not sure when it happened (I rarely use the phone modem) but
the modem has DISAPPEARED! Internet Connect says Device Not Found. System Profiler says the same.
And, curiously, Apple Hardware Test, shows, first, 'FOUND' before it gets to the test for the modem, and then when it reaches the modem test, it then says 'NOT FOUND'
Some board postings say that there was modem-disappearing problem before 10.4.2 which fixed it.
Mine is still gone.
Help?

I have received no solutions as of yet. FWIW, my G4 iMac still shows the modem on the system profilier, but still "could not open the communication device."
My G4 iMac has version 10.3.9 running. I still cannot get it to connect to the phone line... Do you know if a DSL line would work?
The internal modem seems to have failed on my G4 iMac as well.
One day it's fine, the next it has gone deaf; thinking a dialtone no longer exists. Shall I replace it? Any thoughts or similar experience? The thing is only 18 months old.

Well, as long as we're airing our random modem problems with iMac G4 (or is that what we're doing? If not, bear with me...) I've written here before about my problems and so far haven't gotten it fixed. For a year or so it takes forever to get a connection, when it goes through all the connecting noises, it finally gets to a place where it just makes a buzzing sound, like a dial tone only higher in pitch. If I don't disconnect it myself, eventually it will tell me that a modem error ocurred and I should check my settings. This might happen once or 20 times before I can finally get connected. Sometimes it will tell me also that my authentication failed. I also was getting the no dial tone message, but that was because I seriously didn't have a dial tone when I had a phone connected on the same jack, for some reason either the phone or the computer wasn't hanging up after using one or the other. I disconnected the phone from this jack and at least solved one of my problems.
I have read here before that the internal modem in some flat screen iMacs isn't very good and they recommend using an external one, but I don't know how to do that or if it would really work.
I have tried using other phone jacks and different phone cords, that's about the only things I could think of to solve the problem; they didn't help.
Is this a problem any of you are familiar with and any ideas how to fix it? I'm not lucky like others here that have dsl or some other way to connect; I live in the boonies and my only link is sorry phone line.
