I can turn off the screen with the hold button like normal and i can get to the slide to power off screen and turn it off if i hold it for 3 secs like normal. when i plug it into my Mac it brings up an error code (picture below) and it doesnt appear in iTunes. also i can still take screen shots on my iPod and iPhoto can import them?

i need help getting it to the screen where i can restore it or just get it to stop doing that.

You might try creating a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html

Log out and log in to the new account. Try connecting the iPod touch while in the new account, and run iTunes. This will run iTunes with a fresh iTunes library and new user preference files. If the problem is on the Mac side, and it's not a problem with the iPod touch, this may allow it to connect properly and let you do a Restore.

You did try to reset it, correct?

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430

"To reset - Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears."

After a reset, it touch should reboot with the Apple logo on the screen. Does this message just comes up again by itself, without connecting?

When you tried my two suggestions (try it in a new account and set iTunes not to sync automatically) earlier, did you do it immediately after a reset, right after this screen comes up on the iPod?

Separate question - Have you tried doing a reset on the iPod while it is connect the the Mac (preferably immediately after a restart) with iTunes already running?

if it still does that when you connect to itunes then you will end up having to restore it.
it get iTunes to recognize it i held the Hold and Home button down until the iPod completely shuts off and kept holding while the apple logo appears like its starting up. after that iTunes will see it in Restore mode (i dont know what its really called) and you can restore it back to normal.
