i am trying to copy music and photos from my maxtor one touch ll 300Gb external HD to my iMac but am having problems. when i tried to copy the music, after a few hours of copying songs (which was much longer than it should have taken), i had a window saying the disc could not be read from or written too. it is copying the photos but it is taking a very long time (about 7 hours for 800 photos). i did also try to copy some dvds over too but the files either didnt play or they played but with no picture and the sound was very bad. does anybody know the problem please?
also the external HD seemed a bit problematic when i connected it too. it was taking a long time to show up on the desk top and prior to that a couple of times it didn't show up at all. i dont know if this info helps at all............
This certainly sounds like a flaky disk. You'll probably find it's taking so long because the OS is having to repeatedly try to copy the data.
You might look in the System Log (either /var/log/system.log or /Applications/Utilities/Console.log) for messages related to the disk.
You might also try Disk Utility's Repair Disk option to see if it can repair the disk. If it can't you might need a more sophisticated tool such as
DiskWarrior.
You might want to check out Maxtor website to make sure you have the latest firmware in your One Touch II. Yes, hard drives do have firmware updates. I had a similar intermittent connection problem with my Western Digital when I first got them. After I updated the firmware, they have been working flawlessly.
I don't know about deleting data but as flakey as that disk sounds if any of the data has any value to you backing it up somewhere else would be a wise move.
