can't transfer music to my ipod touch

I updated my itunes yesterday, and it deleted ALL of my music. Now I can't re-add my music from my external hard drive. I used to be able to drag and drop all of my MP3s, but it won't let me. Is this a new protection issue, or is my ipod touch/itunes broken?

does the new itunes require the libray to be synced?

I'm afraid I do not understand this question.

I can say this: You put songs in your library. Your library may then be synced to an iPod. If you auto sync your iPod and you delete songs from your library, when you sync again, the songs will not be on the iPod. You can avoid this by manually managing your iPod.

Don't know if this helps, but, again, I do not understand your question.

copied is an additional bit of info:
I should also clarify, that I can't even drop my "Library" music in. the ONLY thing that works, is if I sync the music folder - and it only adds the most recent 3 albums I purchased from the itunes store...

with that said - my external hard drive was never synced, or in my Library. It was just that - an external cache of thousands of mp3s, that I would just drag and drop when I wanted to add anything. I've been doing it this way for 5 years, but this is a new(ish) ipod (touch), and this is the first time this has ever happened...
