Can't buy gift certificates

Clicking the final "Buy" confirmation button in the Gift Certificate purchase module produces the following error message:

"This account is not currently eligible to purchase gift certificates. However, you can purchase iTunes online gift cards from the Apple Online Store at http://store.apple.com/nz or in Apple Retail stores"

Not true - the store.apple.com/nz site simply refers back to the same gift certificate routine in iTunes which crashes at the last stage with the same error message

My account has purchased Gift certificates online through iTunes in the past and currently is able to purchase one-off download items - I bought something I didn't really want to check!

What has caused this bug in the Gift Certificate system?

When will it be corrected ?

I'm having exactly the same problem. I recently bought a gift certificate for my girlfriend. Then I encountered no problems.
However today I tried to buy a gift certificate and I got the same error messages as Ronelder described above.

Are there other people that are experiencing the same problem? Is this a bug?

Yes the itunes store is throwing one of its regular silly wobblies, last time I complained and after three days when the fault had been fixed some wonk came back and simple said there was no proble and that it was working. I guess we can expect that same rubbish this time as well. Perhaps they should upgrade the equipment to another supplier...

Is anyone else having difficulty purchasing any from this lot? I had a reply to my query, it said
"I cannot tell you why it is not working" and went on to suggest that I drove round town to find a store that sold gift vouchers.
If this is the Apple version of "customer support", then it stinks.
The even more stupid thing is that the monthly allowance was processed only hours before their poor system fell over AGAIN.
So why are the dummies at Apple refusing to telll me why it is no longer working?

I have the same issue-for a week now-even though I have purchased extensively through the itunes store. It allowed me to buy 2 gift certificates for 50$ each, but the next one I went to purchase went through to the final step, and then would proceed no further, but said: this purchase would exceed the maximum gift certificate purchase for this account

Apple-where are you? Please, help me to help you-take my money!

I am having the exact same problem.
I've tried changing all my payment options, but that didn't help.
I've been mucking around with it about half an hour now.
If the error message gave some info as to why my account is not eligible and how to solve it that would be helpful. But now I see it's a bigger boo boo than that...sigh

I ran into this problem today when I attempted to purchase a gift certificate as a birthday gift for a friend. I was successful in the past so I sent an email to iTunes shop support re: my problem and this was the major part of their reply:

Hello Stefan,

I understand you have been unable to purchase iTunes Store Gift Certificates using your account and would like to know why. Please know, I can appreciate your concerns. My name is Jesse and I would truly like to help you with your issue.

I'm sorry, but unfortunately, I cannot comment about this issue on behalf of the iTunes Store.

Until this issue is resolved, another option is to purchase iTunes Gift Cards. iTunes Gift Cards are available in many denominations throughout the United States at several retailers, such as book stores, grocery stores, electronics stores, drug stores, discount stores, and Apple Store retail locations, to name just a few.

To compensate you for this inconvenience, I have also issued 3 song credits to your [email address deleted] iTunes Store account. You can use these to buy the individual songs of your choice from the iTunes Store.

As you can see from the length of this thread, Apple lack the skill set to sort out this issue which is down to their lack of skill, interest or customer understanding. While they can do pretty boxes they cannot do technology. Their approach to customer support was to tell me to drive round town to one of their very convenient other suppliers.
Hello (Cr)apple, you are NOT a convenient or reliable supplier, what you 'do' as customer service is less than fit for purpose. Your message honesty cannot be measured. After all the non existant cannot be seen touched or measured.

I called Apple, they referred me to the itunes Live Chat and this is the ticker from that transaction:

*

Hi, my name is Lisa. It'll be just a moment while I review the comments you provided.
*

Lisa: I understand that you are unable to purchase iTunes Gift Certificates on your account. Is this correct?
*

Henry Cline: yes
*

Henry Cline: I purchased four the other day, but now I am locked out
*

Lisa: Apple is currently working on a solution to this issue. You can however do one of these things: Create a new account and purchase them through it, Purchase a Gift Card through a local retailer or go to a local Apple store and purchase one there.
*

Henry Cline: OK, sorry to hear that. I kinda wanted to purcashe some today as email gifts for a project I have been working on. I hope the situations is fixed soon.
*

Henry Cline: thanks for your support.
*

Henry Cline: Henry

So, we can wait for Apple to fix the problem.
