iTunes 8.0 installation error --- network resource is unavailable / .msi

Hello.

When I was trying to install the latest version of iTunes I found an error message saying the following:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below."

Yet, when I search my entire computer I cannot find any file named iTunes.msi.

To further the problems, I cannot uninstall iTunes because it is prompting me with the exact same message I typed out above.

I am also unable to open the iTunes program because of this same problem. I cannot access iTunes, yet I see it in my program files directory.

Oh, and after that message above appears, I click cancel and this message shows up:
"The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it."

What does this all mean?

Please help!

When you get messages about network resources and missing msi files, it usually means you need the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility.

Here is a method for removal of iTunes with clean up and reinstall.

== uninstall with cleanup ==
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime (the one without iTunes)

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program. The installer doesn't give any message to confirm the installation.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/

(To run the program – All Programs>>Windows Install)

Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:
XP
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925

Vista
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923

*If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry*, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.

When you get to deleting Quicktime files in the system32 folder as advised in the method, you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.

Restart your PC.

Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)

Remove any references you find to the programs you removed – you should find entries the programs where the uninstall failed.

If you don’t see an entry for one of the programs that did not uninstall, look out for blank entries or numeric entries that look like version numbers e.g. 7.x for Quicktime or 1.x for Bonjour.

restart your PC

Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.

If it does, install iTunes.

Hi
With reference to Polydorus' response, if you remove iTunes and its components will your Library and playlists be deleted? I foolishly don't have a backup.

I am also getting the same error message about the missing iTunes.msi file but have been able to find versions of this file already on my PC, however when I redirect the file settings for where iTunes should be installed (to where I can find .msi file), I am stll getting the missing component message. In addition I am also getting a message "We could not complete your iTunes request...Please repair or reinstall iTunes (-42404)"

Thanks for any help.

Okay, I am following the instructions, but once I get to the step of downloading a fresh iTunes Program, I get the same original message saying the following:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below."

I cannot find the file and all I can do is press Cancel.

Then it tells me:

"The older version of iTunes cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group."

I have been away for a while.

The method I gave has been very successful in resolving msi issues. If it didn't work for you, we need to walk through what you did to make sure that it was all done correctly.

I would not expect you to get a message about network resources or msi files when you download the iTunes installer, unless you tried to install from your browser, or used update. You need to save the iTunes and Quicktime installers on your desktop and run them from there.

When you used the removal method, which programs uninstalled without error and which did not.

When you ran the cleanup utility, did you find entries for each of the programs that would not uninstall and did you remove them?
Occasionally a problem program does not show up correctly in the cleanup utility.

Hey! Okay so I am having MAJOR troubles fixing my iTunes problem. I tried doing what you said to above, but i keep getting the same message alert:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'i Tunes.msi' in the box below"

Even when i go to my control panel and try to uninstall everything, i get the same exact pop up. I downloaded the clean up thing as well and that didn't seem to help any.

Can you please help me figure out whats wrong with this?

Can you find and run the Msicuu.exe file? You should be getting a list of installed programs, not some kind of scan.

edit - you might also want to make sure you don't have some hung installs already going. See if there are MSIExec process already running in Task Manager > Process tab. If so, end them and try the Unistaller Cleanup agin.
