NVRM: Read Error: GPU 0

My screen seems to freeze more frequently since the first crash a few days ago.

Sometimes strange lines/blocks appear (disordered view).

I managed to dump a crashlog:

I'm running a MacBook Pro 2.2GHz with 10.5.6. I get the same thing for the past couple of weeks. Have also seen mouse cursor change to a random block of pixels rather than a pointer, and some reorganisation of the screen into blocks just before the machine locks up. Seemed to happen mostly on wake from sleep, not running anything graphics intensive and the machine was not hot.

Over the last week, I've not seen the above but have had the machine lock up when doing graphics stuff like playing DVDs. It's very intermittent though. Last panic log below.

I'm thinking this is probably a hardware fault since it's started happening recently without making any OS changes.

Dave,

I am seeing that same error on my MBP. It started about a week ago and has gotten increasingly worse. Like you I have to hold the power button to get restart the machine... Interestingly I occasionally get a panic right at start up. When I first saw this issue I wasn't able to load up the finder- I had constant panics at start up... I got around this by holding X (booting in safe mode) and then running disk utility on my HD. Now I can get into the finder... but I have these occasional crashes which are pretty terrible. Strange thing is the crashes are pretty random. The first sign that I notice that the machine is about to die is that itunes starts skipping... then the external keyboard dies finally the mouse goes!

Check this log out... Almost the same as your's:

Any help would be great... If this isn't resolved soon I am going to try to take this in... Its not acceptable to be crashing 3+ times a day.

The GPU is the Graphics Processor Unit. Unless this happens when you are running games, or certain third party software the only thing that really taxes it is screen redraws and display of video. Run the hardware test that came with the machine. If nothing is detected, it is more likely the RAM that is at fault. If something is detected, report it to AppleCare.

I've come to the conclusion that I might be suffering from this "MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues"

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377

Therefore i've booked an appointment with an apple store 'genius'. My machine has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT chip and was manufactured in the time range indicating it may have this problem. You can use your serial number to determine the manufacture date of your MBP, I used this web page:

http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

I'll report back here as to what happens next.

Just got back from the apple store... They seem to think my graphics card is fine...however they seemed to think my issues are RAM related. Anyways, they didn't have the RAM in stock so I'll be traveling back over there this weekend so they can run some "tests." If my ram fails their tests then they will swap it out... They suggested a complete reload of my system. I rather not waste my time at this point. It was working fine (30+ days of up time) a week ago.
