Superdrive Lens Cleaning.

Hello folks,

Just wondering if there was any recommended way of keeping the iMac slot-loading Superdrive clean. The laser lens I mean. I've a couple of questions in particular...

1. Can I use a CD lens cleaner? Is this different from a DVD lens cleaner? Which one is best for the Superdrive?

2. Is there a special type of lens cleaning solution for the slot-loading optical drives as opposed to the more common tray-loading drives? The len-cleaners I've seen seem to be made for tray-loading optical drives - as the operating illustrations show sketches of tray-loading drives.

I do hope this doesn't sound too confusing.

Be great to hear from any of you with some knowledge/experience with this...

Stephen, Welcome to the discussion area!

Get a CD/DVD cleaning kit that includes a disc with small brushes on the bottom. Cleaning is done simply by inserting this disc and waiting for the drive to eject it. The drive will spin up and the brushes will clean the lens.

I actually did buy a Philips CD lens cleaner. It has the small brushes you mentioned. However, I was unsure about a CD lens cleaner being able to clean a DVD optical drive? Would I need to specifically get a DVD lens cleaner instead?

I've heard that cd lens cleaners might actually do damage to the lens. Is this true? Are lens cleaners really that reliable? I have always steered clear of lens cleaners to avoid the possibility of damage.

Stephen,

Cleaning the laser lens in not like cleaning a lens on a camera or telescope. In other words a bit of dust is not going to degrade it's performance in a way you'd notice.

I'd hold off unless you're having some kind of problem.
