recording multiple times on a CD-R

I am new to Macs so this question may be kind of basic. On my Win 98 machine, I could record over and over again to the same CD-R using the basic software that came with the CD hardware. It appears that I can't do this on my iMAC. Does the CD HAVE to be a CD-RW in order to record multiple sessions on the same CD, and if not, how do I do this? I have tried to follow all the instructions for using the Disk Utility and have not had any luck.

No, you can add material to a CD-R after it's been burned. It's referred to as "multiple sessions". But you cannot do it from Finder. The Finder burn in Mac OS X only burns a single session, so once you burn a CD-R in Finder, it's done; you can't add to it.

To be able to create a CD that you can add material to later, either follow the instructions in Disk Utility's Help (search for "multisession"), or get a third party application such as CD Session Burner or Roxio's Toast which makes burning multiple-sessions much easier.

Hope this helps.
