When I hit the space bar,I can view what I have done in the canvas but the playhead does not move with it, it'd help me heaps to see where the cuts are happening, strange that it is doing this because I haven't messed with anything since then.
Any ideas?

To be more obtuse, you can manually scroll l/r on the timeline during playback if you want to keep the playhead in view. If you are using a mighty mouse or a logitech mouse that supports sideways scrolling, its a trivial task to keep up with the playback.
This happens to me once in a while. The playhead will not move on the timeline in real-time as the canvas is playing, so I can't figure out which cut I'm on. But when I stop playback, the playhead then updates so I know where I stopped.
Restarting FCP or my computer usually fixes this problem. Not sure if that's exactly what you were talking about, though.
I just had this happen to me this morning. The playhead WILL update on the fly, but not past the end of the screen. So if you want to see the entire sequence with a scrolling playhead, just zoom out.
But I can't figure out how to get the playhead moving again. Let's try the ol' restart.
