Listening to Sequential Podcasts

With my original iPod (the click wheel) when one podcast finished the next one in the category would begin - kind of like the next song in a playlist. However, with my "new" iPod (still a couple of years old) once one podcast ends it goes back to the main menu. If I try to skip from the podcast I'm listening to to the next one it goes back to the main menu. Is there a setting I can change so that it automatically advances to the next podcast in the category? Thanks.

Are you sure you remember correctly? 🙂 I just tried it on my iPod "click wheel" (4th gen iPod), and at the end of a podcast, it goes back the menu. Then again, the change may have happened with a software update during the 4th gen iPod run, because on my 3rd gen iPod, podcasts do NOT have their own category yet. Podcasts are put into a playlist called Podcasts and therefore play one after the other like in any playlist.

Anyways, here's something you can do. When you want to listen to a sequence of podcasts on the iPod, use the On-The-Go playlist feature to create a list of podcasts in the order you want to hear them. So you can make a list of episodes from different podcasters and do not have to listen in reverse chronological order, so there is more flexibility. Once you put the podcasts onto the On-The-Go playlist, go to the On-The-Go playlist and start playing. Since it's a playlist, the items will play one after the other. Once you are done, use the command to clear the On-The-Go playlist so that you are ready the next time.

I listen to a podcast series that is actually just a new song that is released every day. It was driving me crazy that I could never play the songs continuously or when using the main shuffle feature. I did some fooling around and found the solution is that you have to use the Get Info feature for the podcast to edit the attributes of every episode (or in my case song).

The solution to this problem:

1. With your iPod selected from within iTunes, click on Podcasts.
2. Right click the Podcast you want to edit, and select "Get Info".
3. Select the "Options" Tab.
NOTE: In my case I want my iPod to treat the shows as songs, not episodes.
4. Check "Media Kind" as "Music".
5. Check "Remember Position" as "No".
6. Check "Skip When Shuffling" as "No".
7. Check "Gapless Album" as "Yes".
8. Click OK and it will now edit each episode of the podcast so that your iPod treats them as songs while keeping them listed under Podcasts on your iPod's menu.

The best part about this is that it will now even play these podcast episodes (which are actually just 500 or so songs) from the Shuffle feature in the iPod's main menu.

Also, it allows you to shuffle the podcast itself with continuous playback.
