Canon Pixma MX850 - Shared name

We have 3 Macs (all Leopard) accessing a Canon MX 850 wirelessly, and while there are no issues printing, there is one annoyance I'd like to correct.

In the left hand pane of the Finder window, under Shared, the printer appears as b000blah-blah-blah. I'd like to rename it to something friendlier.

There is no where in the printer control panel to change this broadcast name, and no where I've found on the Canon web site is this addressed.

I am hoping that someone here might have a solution.

Thanks for reading in.

Hello Sam,

The name you are seeing in the Shared section of the Finder is for the card slot - not for printing. If it was the printer queue name then you could change it via Options & Supplies in System Preferences > Print & Fax.

From reading the User Guide for my MP970, I don't believe this name can be changed. But there is a setup procedure for enabling the card slot to be viewed across a network so it may be possible to change the name rather than just enabling its view. The setup is performed via the Canon IJ Network Tool. Open the MX850 printer queue and click the Utility icon. Select Network in the top menu and select the MX850 in the bottom pane. Select Maintenance and under Card Slot Setup, click the Setup button. If it can be changed it would be here.
