External FireWire Hard Drive with Invalid Volume Header

Hi All

As the subject say's I have an external FireWire HDD with an Invalid Volume Header when I run the disk utility. Below is what I get:

Disk Utility stopped verifying “External 120” because the following error was encountered:

The underlying task reported failure on exit

Verifying volume “External 120”
Invalid Volume Header
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume External 120 needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair

Then when I run the repair, I get:

Verify and Repair disk “External 120”
Invalid Volume Header
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Repairing volume.
Rechecking volume.
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume External 120 was repaired successfully.

1 HFS volume checked
Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 HFS volume repaired

Still cant mount the External 120 Drive on either an eMac or an Intel iMac.

Simple question. WHY???

Hi GrayOwl,

Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft...

http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/

Or reformatting it which will erase everything.

Hi All

Things are getting interesting. Have run DiskWarrior twice now both from the eMac and all is OK up to Step 8, rebuilding of the directory, I think, when this message pops up 3/4 of the way through:
"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power Button for several seconds or press the Restart Button"

I'm now going to try and run DiskWarrior from the CD tray. Will keep you posted.

Right. Have run DW from the CD Tray and all goes well. It rebuilds the directory but cannot replace it due to the following:

"DiskWarrior has successfully built a new directory for the disk 'External 120'. The new directory cannot replace the original directory due to a Mac OS services failure"

What does all this mean???

At that point, you may be able to copy files from the bad drive.

Hi Malcolm

No, I don't think I can. The Mac can't see the drive and when I go to look at the preview in DW I get the following:

'DW encountered an unexpected error while attempting to show the preview disk 'External 120' on the desktop.

To preview this disk, restart the DW disc and try rebuilding again. If you report this error, please mention the error code (2160, 2304)'

According to the Alsoft site, I don't have the correct version of DW to run on a Mac with OSX 10.4.11 installed. Again, the DW version I've got is the latest version out, v4.1.1

Will have to wait and see what Alsoft has to say.
