giving my GF an iphone question!

i was planning on buying an iphone for my girlfriend for her birthday/ one year anniversary but i had a few questions. She already has a family plan that her parents pay for through att. I was wondering how to go about getting her an iphone and all the little bells and whistles that go along with it, how much it costs for internet use and all that.. is it as simple as tracking down an iphone and throwing her simcard into it? any advice would be great. Thanks :]

No, the iPhone Sim Card is married to the phone's IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) during activation. If you are in the US, that is done at an Apple or AT&T retail store.

i dont mean to ask questions on some one elses site but i dont no how to send a post..
Im considering buying an iphone and with the last comment i was just wondering if i had to buy a new simcard with the iphone? or can i use an excisting one? and if i do need to buy one can i use my old number?

The iPhone comes with its own SIM and you should be able to keep your existing number.

Where she is on her parents plan, you may want to check with them to make sure a gift like this would be okay. You will also need to find out from the parents whether her phone is eligible for upgrade. If she is not eligible for an upgrade at this time, the gift card for the phone will set you back $399/$499.
