Grey Dot next to some AIM Contacts

Recently I have added a lot of AIM users to my iChat buddy list and a few of the contacts constantly have a grey dot to the left of their screen name -- I was just wondering what the grey dot means exactly... offline, away, invisible, or ??? These contacts never seem to change from the grey dot...
