Fed up with iphone

As many of other people in here have written, since the 2.2.1 update I have had problems with my wifi. When at home, I cannot connect to safari as my phone apparently cannot connect to the internet, despite there being full signal on display - as soon as I try to access even to apple homepage the signal disappears. I;m afraid I'm not as technically minded as many who use these forums, but its quite annoying to say the least. I have tried (as advised), network restore, full restore and now restoring the iphone to original settings. Went to my local Apple store in Bluewater yesterday and the pleb on the shop floor told me he'd heard of the problem but that he was sure resetting network settings for me would work...before leaving I queried it saying I had already done this, but he knew best. Suffice to say when I got home I was right - so arranged an appointment at the genius bar this morning. The lady I saw was most polite but told me to go home and reset the phone to original settings and that may work...apparently she'd heard nothing of this problem.. So, here we are now, another restore done and still the same problem. I cannot believe that Apple know nothing of this as the lady tried to tell me today - how can so many people on here have the problem?? I look after my phone, sad as it may be but its my pride and joy and it doesn't work. I've tried trauling through the forum but has anyone actually had any positive response from Apple in the UK?? Sod's law, but when I go in to the Apple store the wifi works, but not at home even though Airport EXpress and ibook all run on the same router. Sorry its a waffle and I know I am not alone but it is so annoying especially when you're lead to believe you have a great product with great back up from the manufacturer.......any help greatly appreciated

Since you have already been to the Apple Store twice they should have a record of this. Go back and simply demand a replacement. You have already done everything you can, and nothing has worked.

What you can do. Charge your iPhone all the way and turn on WiFi. Try and see if you can figure out the charge level left when it shuts off. Go to the Apple Store with it at that charge level, hopefully at the store it will also not be working.

It makes me laugh...I went in this morning having said to the wife that I was not leaving without a proper explanation and solution...20 minutes later I come out stupidly thinking it would work. The girl this morning said she had heard nothing of it but clearly had done - as someone else has pointed out it is all over the forums so how they cannot know I don't get. Looks like I'll be back off to Apple tomorrow - this time I'll try to be stronger and not accept a fob off!! thanks for your comment

Also, even at full charge the wifi will stop working. If I go into settings and wifi, my network will have full signal, but the wifi display at the top of the screen will be 'o' - does that mean anything as such. It's as if it recognises the network but can't connect...and the password has been entered etc

Is there anything I can do with the home network? As I say, the problems only started when I updated software to 2.2.1 - the router is the same and settings haven't changed. The ibook I'm writing from now is working perfectly as is airport express...looking at the phone it still shows 'o' for signal but checking wifi networks in settings show's a full signal for my network?

if i had to guess, i think you need to rest your wifi router. I had a similar problem before where i would be connected to my network, with full bars, but couldn't get online. i logged into my router and noticed that the MAC address of my iphone was associated with a different IP that the router was giving it. basically, the DHCP table had the iphone's listed as say 192.168.1.2 but the phone was actually assigned 192.168.1.3 (neither address was being used by another device on the network). so my options were to manually enter in the IP that the DHCP table in the router had, empty/refresh the DHCP table or to reset the router to factory settings. I just manually entered in the IP that the router has listed for the iPhone because it was the easiest thing for me to do.

there's probably a conflict happening with what the router thinks the iphone's IP is and what it's actually assigning the iphone. instead of reseting the iphone, try reseting the router to factory settings and set up your network again.

Thanks for your post

As I said I'm not the most technically minded - is there a way of getting into the settings for the router. From memory when I set up the wireless initially I had to end a numerical address to pick up the signal of the router - is that correct...if so, where would I find the address I need.Tried looking at the IP address for iphone and in network setting it says 169.254.53.206 where as my ibook shows an IPv4 of 192.168.0.3 - I'm very confused?? The IP address for the router is 192.168.0.1 so should the IP address for my phone start 192??

yes, there's definitely something going on with the router because the iphone's IP should be something like 192.168.0.x and not 169.254.53.206

you should be able to log into the router by using this address: 192.168.0.1

what kind of router are you using? linksys?

Hi kcbabi,

As John said there may be an issue with the router, because the iPhone has a 169.254.x.x IP address. It may be easily resolved by unplugging the router, waiting ~10 seconds and plugging it back in.

Also, try Resetting Network Settings on the iPhone(as Deggie suggested), Just tap Settings> General> Reset> Reset Network Settings.

Does the iPhone get another IP address after power cycling the router and Resetting Network Settings on the iPhone?

This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26003 provides more information about self-assigned IP addresses.
