Attaching a hard drive to Apple TV

I think that I already know the answer to this question, and I think it is no, but hopefully I am wrong.
Is there any way to attach a hard drive to my Apple TV directly?
I have the small Apple TV, and store all of my movies, TV shows and music on my desk top's terabyte external hard drive. This has not been a problem until recently, but currently I am watching a show that I downloaded from Apple TV. I downloaded all four seasons, and the entire collection of seasons is too big for my Apple TV memory, the synching choices don't let me pick specific episodes to sync and I have had to do some very creative and time consuming manipulation of files to be able to watch through the show in order(Battlestar Galactica, if you were curious).
There is a USB port, I should be able to attach an external hard drive, but I don't think it will work, and I want to know before I but another hard drive.

I have over 150 movies on a TB external drive and I stream them to my apple tv with no problems. What I do is setup my iTunes for custom sync to the apple tv and uncheck all movies I dont have any selected the only thing I sync up with the apple tv is my music and some pic's, then I leave ituens open and when I go to the apple tv I just select "My Movies" and they are all listed.
