Keeping it clean

Over the past I have owned several powerbooks and macbook pros. One thing I have always noticed is that the surface of the trackpad, as well as the area next to the trackpad where my wrists or palms rest easily get worn out and discolored / stained.

i just got a new macbook pro unibody, and i want to be sure this doesnt happen again...so how do i prevent this? is there a proper way to clean it after use, or every week or something?

Also the speakers get quite dirty too...is there a way to clean these out?

in general, im looking for suggestions on how to keep this thing as pristine as possible over the long run.

Well the first thing is to never, ever eat while working on it. That's the number one way to get it dirty. That and not washing your hands after eating or getting them oily and dirty and then working on it. If you can do that, the only thing that really would get dirty would be the screen. You can also get a keyboard cover that goes between the screen and keyboard. That helps when it's closed and they don't rub against each other.

Lastly, keep the surface clean by periodically wiping it down. I use the Pledge that comes in a blue bottle that is ok for plastic, metal, and computer (matte and glossy) screens. Just always spray it on the cloth only and never the computer itself. You can use a microfiber cloth.

How are your speakers getting dirty? Do you mean the little holes get plugged?

In my opinion, the best, and only, thing that you should use is a damp microfiber cloth, with a very small amount of Windex. Do not use Windex on the screen. As for microfiber cloths, Shinex makes excellent ones, which are available at Lowe's and the Home Depot.

Any other liquid solution could cause a stain on the anodized aluminum.

I used to use iKlear on all my portables, till I noticed that it would streak the matte screens pretty badly. Even while using the microfiber cloths. Now I use Pledge multi surface (it's in the blue bottle), you get a lot more for your money, and it doesn't streak. I still use the iKlear packets when i'm at a clients cleaning their screen, but it still leaves some streaking.

The way I use the iKlear product is to spray a bit of the product on the larger micro fiber cloth (never spray it directly onto a screen or other notebook surface!) I then run it in one direction continuously around the surface of the screen. Then I take the smaller, finer cloth without any product on it and run it over the screen again. I have never noticed any steaks, but I have the glossy screen on my MBP. I like it because it is ammonia, alcohol and sodium Lauryl sulfate free and anti static.

Using something made by a common household cleaning company would personally make me a bit nervous - 🙂

Just my 2 cents
