I am using Safari as my preferred Browser. However, since I installed Tiger 10.4.2 Safari seems to freeze or respond very slowly to command while it spins the color wheel endlessly. I have to force quit the application and change the page to something else, after which it seems to behave normal for a while.
Any suggestion for something I should know?
As I continue trying to find an apparent cause for the slow down and occasional freeze I am wondering if it could be the various RSS feeds that are loading after Safari has started? Could there be too many thus blocking any parallel tasks called upon within Safari?
You may have already tried this.... but here is what worked for my Safari issues:
Install the latest Safari update then -
Clear Safari Cache: Safari -> Empty Cache
Clear Cookies: Safari -> Preferences -> Security - > show cookies - Clear all
(You can also Reset Safari: Safari -> Reset Safari (this will remove everything and reset)
Clear the Java cache: In Finder, open Applications -> Utilities -> Java
There are normally two Java Apps, (you may have one or both): "Java 1.4.2 Plugin Settings.app" and "Java 1.3.1 Plugin Settings.app" . Quit Safari, and Run each one. In Java 1.4.2 you should see a "Cache" tab and or a "Clear" button, in Java 1.3.1 you will see a Cache tab and a "Clear JAR Cache button. Once you clear the Java Caches, open Safari and see if that helps.
An alternate method is to trash the Java cache directory itself - located in:
~/Library/Caches/Java Applets/cache
I turned RSS off, you can do it in the preferences. It got better but still has a lot of problems.
You can try using another browser like Firefox, Camino, Omniweb or my new favorite Opera. I've been using Opera for about a week now and it hasn't crashed once. It also seems much faster than Safari but YMMV of course.
I think this has something to do with the adclick type junk some sites have under their hoods...It seems to happen to me on my home G4 when trying to load a page...spinning beachball forever and the eventually the page will load. Freezes up my whole system...Was fine UNTIL the latest updates to 10.4
Hi Charlie,
Thanks for your compassion and suggestions. I have used Firefox but was not too happy with it because occasionally it did not open certain websites (in a foreign language) for whatever reason and sometimes would not display all graphics. So I gave up on them. I will look into Opera, however.
Again, Thank you!
Rudolf
I tried all of your suggestions and it did in fact make a big difference. So, my sincere thanks for your attention to my problem.
BTW, I am suspicious that part of the problem is related to a particular web site: CBS News. It may at times take too long to fetch a particular graphic for display or may search for a plugin on my computer it can't find. Who knows? Without an intelligent error message we are bound to tap in the dark.
Again, lots of thanks for your help.
What you describe is exactly how it appears on my PB G4. However, as you may find in some of my replies to other helpful Samaritans, clearing accumulated RSS feed did help some, but the real breakthrough, fo now at least, came when I reset Safari (which apparently clears history, cache and cookies). Since those devilish features accumulate their waste in our systems, I am prepared to be on guard for another slow down in the future.
I wish to thank you for your compassion and suggestion.
Hopefully your system will get back to speed again soon.
