Quitting Safari - impossible

My iBook G3 has been unused for several months.

I just fired it up, preparatory to taking it traveling, and I discover that Safari 3.2.1 is malfunctioning. I can't get out of it. When I type commandQ nothing but the spinning ball, same for selecting Quit Safari from the menu. I have to force quit - with comand option esc as my only way out.

I have Safari Plus installed, but it hasn't caused trouble before.

I have seen other posts with this issue. The solution offered, Reset Safari, leaves me wondering. Do I leave all the check boxes checked, or do it incrementally? And what are the repercussions of doing this? Can I regain what I've lost - icons say?

Well I just got my macbook a couples weeks ago and when I use safari it has froze a couple of times already and I got the spinning wheel. I tried to force quit but it wouldn't close and I had to click force quit a couple of times for it to close. It seems that when i use safari sometimes the whole computer freezes and I have to manually shut it down. Is that happening to other people?

To quote Klaus1: "Very few, and they post here so making that seem like a more common problem than it really is."

Really. So we're making it up are we? For every one that does post here there are many more that don't - try non-Apple forums on computing for a slightly less biased view.
I'm using my PC at the moment as Safari is so rubbish these last few weeks I can open nothing or surf nowhere without waiting an age. I couldn't even access this forum on my Mac, and came here on the PC because YES there is yet another problem with Safari. I'm waiting ages to open Safari, when I type the letters appear seconds after being typed, and on closure I get the spinning ball and the mesage "Safari closed unexpectedly" almost every time.
Sorry Klaus I'm no expert on computers so I expect it to work, and since 1996 Apple has worked for me, however recently it's been so poor I've gone to Windows more and more.
I can't afford to spend office time looking for solutions to problems that people say don't exist.

Sorry to hear you are having a hard time making Safari work on your Mac.

I would not recommend 'a non-Apple Forum' as a source of reliable information.

Instead, why not start your own thread and detail your problems so we can try to find a solution?

So we're making it up are we?

Never suggested you were! But please accept the fact that millions of users have trouble-free service from Safari!

Your problem may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread.

In order for us to give your problem our undivided attention in order to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac you are using, what operating system, and what version of the application in question.

The reason that threadjacking is frowned on (as mentioned in the terms use which you can read by clicking the link to the right on this page) is for the most part a practical one:

By starting your own thread your problem can get individual attention, focussed on your particular set of circumstances.

By joining somebody else's thread it becomes tricky to answer more than one question at the same time, and can lead to confusion for both parties.

So if you don't mind the minor inconvenience, please start your own thread so we can get to grips with your particular problem!

Hi Klaus,

Remember me? The OP.

First of all, I admire your patience and politeness. I've never been threadjacked before...

Now, back to my problem. I turned on the G4 after a few days off, and - oops - same issue with Safari: the spinning beach ball on quitting resulting in a need to force quit.

I reset everything except "remove all website icons" (for some reason I didn't check that one off - perhaps I feared loosing them forever...) Anyway, it worked a bit and then the spinning ball again on quitting OR Safari just pooped out and wouldn't go to another website unless I quit and reopened. I don't know if the problem would have recurred in the iBook since I haven't used it since I solved the problem.

I am NOT having this problem with my MBP. All 3 computers have sort of virtually the same stuff on them to some extent... except the MBP has not had Safari Plus installed. Could that be a problem?

I am still on Safari 3.2.1

Mrs H

PS I think you may remember my asking questions about open DNS but I never changed the Location network settings on the G4 so that's not an issue here.

Hi Mrs B - no, how could I ever forget you! ๐Ÿ˜‰

The version of SafariPlus listed for OS 10.4.11 and Safari 3 is version 1.6a1 beta (pre-release). That worked perfectly for me for every version of Safari 3 on my PPC Mac when on Tiger. Apparently the developers will not in fact be developing this extremely useful little application further, which is why it is no longer listed by VersionTracker.

Install it (it cannot do any harm). If it works you will see SafariPlus listed in the main Safari menu. If it doesn't you won't! As I recall, if the version of SafariPlus was the wrong one for your system you would not get a crash with Safari, it simply would not appear in the Safari menu.

(In fact a version specifically for Leopard has been developed by others and works a treat. It is available from http://sweetpproductions.com/safaricookies/ I only added that for the sake of others who might read this.)

By all means get rid of those useless, space and memory consuming 'favicons' (website icons), they will slow down Safari.

All 3 computers have sort of virtually the same stuff on them to some extent.

Thanks for making that so clear! ๐Ÿ˜€

In reality, what does that mean in terms of what might affect Safari, like enhancers, input managers and the like?

Actually it's H, not B (but B is my maiden name initial, so you are not that far wrong in hitting the incorrect key!)
I didn't really think you would have forgotten me; that was a bit of sarcasm due the fact that I lost control of my own thread.
The version of SafariPlus listed for OS 10.4.11 and Safari 3 is version 1.6a1 beta (pre-release).

That's the one I installed a month or so ago, and as you say it works fine (or at least I think it has.) I just mentioned it because our 2 Macs that have SPlus installed have balked on Safari and the one the doesn't have it (the MBP) is fine (to quote Mr H who uses the MBP: "I can quit Safari, no problem, what's the fuss?)
I'm just searching here for reasons why Safari is giving me grief, aka I can't get out of it and SafariPlus is the only "enhancer (or) input manager" that is installed - new or otherwise.
By all means get rid of those useless, space and memory consuming 'favicons' (website icons), they will slow down Safari.

OK, I will, but will they come back? Could they be the problem with Safari not shutting down? Seems unlikely? I fine them somewhat useful when I check to see if the address is correct.

I tried to make things simple ๐Ÿ˜‰
In reality, what does that mean in terms of what might affect Safari, like enhancers, input managers and the like?

Of which I have none - just SafariPlus on the 2 Macs which are having Safari trouble, as I mentioned above.

So, the problem persists - and I have to force quit and I lose connection to Safari so when I put in a new search, it just stares at me - and no, I am not using open DNS, just my original Automatic setting and nothing else has been changed, for years re Safari.
HELP!

One more thought - I tried to get rid of the website icons as you suggest
By all means get rid of those useless, space and memory consuming 'favicons' (website icons), they will slow down Safari.

The option only shows up in resetting Safari, I couldn't find it in any of the Safari prefs. Am I missing something? And I haven't done it there yet, do you really think this is the problem?
