Several httpd processes in activity monitor

Hi,

I opened up activity monitor today and I found five (5) processes called httpd running under my user name (default user, not admin) and using each 2.5GB of virtual memory. Now I am not running any server, I am not using apache/php. I have not lunched any of those processes on purpose. Does anyone have an explanation for their presence and if I should 1. kill them; or 2. let them be.
If the former, how to prevent them from running again ?
Thanks for any support.
