New version 1.3.1 (v312.3) continuously crashes 0n 10.3.9

Called Apple support. Cleared caches, preferences, etc. still no results. Installed a new user, still no result.
After fooling around for 45 minutes Apple disconnected and did not call back. He was ready to have me start Software Restore 1.
Never had any trouble with previous version. The crash does not affect anything else. I am restarting Safari 20-30 times a day.

Hello T. Weston:

You might consider doing an archive and install from your software install CD/DVD. A&I will install a fresh copy of OS X and retain all of your programs and files and settings.

Read about it here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120

You will need to update to the latest version of OS X and apply other updates as needed.

Repair permissions before and after updates and have a good backup (something that is essential, in my opinion, at all times).

A variation on that: After updating from Safari 1.3 to 1.3.1 it starts to launch and then quits every time. Reinstalling version 1.2 seems to work again but if I patch it up to 1.3.1 it quits on launch again. I haven't got the installer for 1.3 so I don't know how it would behave.
Probably needs the same solution as the original post by T. Weston.
Should I just learn to live with 1.2 or is there something worthwhile in 1.3.1?
Thanks for reading.

Safari 1.3 came as part of an update to OS X rather than as a separate Safari update, so you might need to rerun the OS X 10.3.9 update to get back to Safari 1.3. You could always control-click on Safari then and choose "Create Archive" to create a zipped backup of Safari 1.3 before applying the 1.3.1 update again. That way, if 1.3.1 were still causing problems, you could trash it and restore 1.3 from the zipped file.

These incremental updates have had bug and security patches. There have been no new features introduced.

You have two choices.

First, there is the basic updater which is good for updating from at least 10.3.8.

Secondly, there is the combo updater which contains all the various updates from 10.3.0 on up. This updater will make sure you have everything, but the file is twice the size as the basic updater.

No matter which way you go, repair permissions afterwards and then check Software Update for anything more recent than these files.

If you haven't tried tossing Safari's preference file yet, yes that is something to try. it is named com.apple.Safari.plist and it is in the Preferences folder in the Library folder. You can also delete the favicons cache which is contained in the Icons folder in the Safari folder in your Library folder. And finally, you can also reset Safari (Safari > Reset Safari). If you haven't already, repair permissions.

Another thing you can do is to check for duplicate fonts. Open up Font Book and look for fonts with a dot in the right-hand column. If you find any, go to the Edit menu and choose "Resolve Duplicates". Do this for every font with a dot.

Now try Safari again and see what happens.

Do the above first. The next two things I would recommend is to try an alternative browser such as Firefox and/or set up a second user to see if Safari works in a clean user account.

Much of your recommendations I have already done with Apple tech support including reset, setting up a new user. Tech finally planned to reinstall from my restore disk but in the process wiped out all my preferneces, my Idisk access, etc. Thats when we were disconnected and I never went back.
Your advice to reinstall 10.3.9 sounded the most logical. The question remains how I could reinstall it without reinstalling Safari 1.3.1.
I will delete and look at the duplicate fonts and then again download 10.3.9.
Thanks

What was the result of trying Safari in a new user? If it crashes in different user accounts, then you have a system-wide problem and not just a problem with your account (such as the plist). Have you tried Safari in the second user account now that you have tried reinstalling the 10.3.9 update?

Safari works with a new user account. It does not work with the main user account.
I would be happy to transfer everything from the main account to the new user account but I don't know how. I have switched to Firefox but would prefer to use Safari.
You have led me logically to thhe point where I was left with Apple tech support before they were disconnected. I must tell you it has been a pleasure working with you and a pain with Apple tech.

Safari works with a new user account.

OK, drag com.apple.internetconfig.plist from your Library/Preferences file to the Desktop and see if that makes any difference. If not, you can drop it back into the Preferences folder to keep the settings it contains.

I am very sorry to hear you had a bad experience with an Apple tech support person. It would be nice if we could figure out what it is that is wrong with your user account. Had you added or used any 3rd-party utilities or plugins for Safari (Pithhelmet, PDF Browser plugin, Safari Extender, Speed Download, etc.)?

Sep 9, 2005 11:18 PM in response to Tom Graves

The drag does not produce results.
No third party material was added. The only change that occurred that I dowloaded the new version of Safari.

Do you think installing 10.1.4 from the restore CD is worth the subsequent struggle to get back to 10.3.9 and possible loss of data? I had bad experiences with losing data following Apple tech instructions. Two years ago I had a major crash while following instructions by telephone.

Right now I lost connection with my IDisk and my backup to Idisk does not work. It happened while following instructions by the tech support. I now get a message
"An irrecoverable internal error has occurred."
Tomorrow I am planning to address this issue on the support forum but I don't know what the tech told me to do that lost my IDisk. He made me trash all my preferences in the library and that could be the cause.
Best regards
