Q: battery charging icon always on even when not plugged in

I have a 60 and 80g 5th generation ipod video both have the battery charging icon on the screen when I try to shut it down. The battery dies very quickly. unless plugged in. Is the battery shot or is it being run down because it never shuts down completly. Help!

First thing to check is look into the dock connector for debris or bend pins. A magnifying glass helps with this.

Second thing is if you use your iPod a lot when doing exercise and other activity where it might be exposed to sweat, you may have dried sweat (i.e. salt) on the pins of the dock connector which can cause small shorts between pins. Cleaning the dock connector with a little alcohol or even DI water (just a tiny bit on a brush or Q-tip) may fix it up for you.
