A strange error in Safari...

Hello

I wish ask for a little help, I have tried to go to a site where I want to sell my G5. On that site there is this place called Market, and they have all kinds of links to product people sell. I wanted to sell my mac there.

But to my amazement I found that I cannot press the links to any of the products linked below the main menu. Above the "Products" menu, it is all ok, but on the side where you can see two smaller segments called "Salgsannoncer" and " Købsannoncer", not one of those links am I able to press. Yet, on my girlfriends iMac, there is no problem. I have tried to wipe everything I can think of in hopes of Safari understanding that those are links and NOT text.

Here is the site : http://www.mediamac.dk/index.php/market

Please if any has any idea or a guide to how to make Safari work again. I'd really appreciate it. I really want to sell my G5.

Thanks...

Hi Tom,

Thanks for writing back so quickly.

Here is what I have tried so far : Tried the page and links on these browsers : Safari 2.0.1, Firefox (Newest), Camino (Newest), I.E (last build). I have emptied the cache in all the browsers, history, Icons in Safari, cookies and restarted the browsers. Still the place where it is giving me the most trouble is in the section where it is written "Salgsannoncer" and "Købsannoncer". Oh and all the products that are not in bold. They simply don't react to the fact that they are links.

I am going out of my mind, I simply cannot fathom how two machines running the same MacOS X 10.4.2 with the same apps, and updates can be so different.

If it was any other site I would not have cared, but I really need to sell my G5. I want to part with it cause I want a Laptop for my travels.

Thanks..

Have you tried creating a new account and then seeing if you have the same problem in that account.

I am assuming you are not generaly having problems at other sites. And if the browser is not letting you click on links that the cursor is not changing into a hand.

Even though you cannot click on a link, does an address appear in the status bar when you hover over a link?

Hi Tom

Nope, thing comes in view when I hover over the link. On these links, you don't have to have an account to view them. In fact even if I log in, it simply does not work.

Here is the strange part, on the top part where you have to long in, I can log in by pressing the links, but only two of them are working like links when all 4 should.

I contacted the webmaster, but he says it is working for them. That was when I tried it on my girlfriends machine and it did too. So I don't know what I might have that is not allowing it to work as it should. But I feel it might be something in the OS. Cause why else is it not working on Firefox or the other browsers? It has to be some kind of defect in the OS. I did a permissions check and it came out all clean.... So now I have no more ideas...

Hi iBod

Well, as I mentioned, you don't need to make a new account to see the linked files. Unless you mean in Tiger?

Anyway, if so how do I make a new Account without completely messing up my current system?

The site allows guests to see everything without having to long in... I wish I could take a screen grab and show you here. In stead of turning into a hand it turns into a that line it makes when you want to copy a quote online or a web address...

Thanks

PS. I just made a new account in my MacOS and it too is suffering the same flaw... S T R A N G E...

Hi,

Unless you mean in Tiger?

Yes, we both meant a new account in Tiger 🙂

This will help us to know whether your problem is local to your account or system wide. You can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> [+] to create a test one (and [-] to remove it if needed)

It won't mess up anything with your current account.

Yep just did that, still same error or flaw... Really strange... (I thought you guys wanted me to install a new OS, I was getting worried... 😉

OK, the fact that you are still having problems in a new user account means that it is a general OS problem and not just something wrong with your main user account. And the problem is not browser-specific because you say it is happening with every browser you have tried.

Are you behind a firewall or proxy or anything, or are you connected directly to the Internet?

Sep 17, 2005 11:10 AM in response to Tom Graves

I am not behind any other firewall other than the macOS X enabled system firewall. I am not directly connected to the net, I am on Airport. However, the same goes for my girlfriends, and she can click on the links. I just tried with my old iBook, blue, with OS 10.3 and it is doing just fine...

Does this help?

Oh yeah, by proxy, what do you mean? If I look at the proxy in my system pref. I see it is empty. So there is nothing written in any of the fields...

It uses passive FTP, that is the only thing I can see marked off..

I note the efforts of Tom and others and it certainly seems to be a problem with the computer you are working from. You have tried Firefox et al and cleared the browser cache. Cookies? A look through there might reveal something. Once accessing that main page have you tried a refresh? Twice.

I have noticed in the past with a particular recalcitrant page, that clearing the browsr cache was not enough and on those occasions, used Omni web browser. After accessing a page and refreshing, I could then load the real new page. This all made me wonder if Safari store some information in System cache.
