canon Pixma MX330 two-sided printing

I've noticed similar issues with other canon printers, but wanted to know if anyone else haven't been able to use the two-side print option with the MX330? I contacted Canon and they were fairly helpful but I've deleted the original drivers and downloaded the other ones from the Canon site as they suggested, and the two-sided option is still grayed out.

Hello and welcome to the Apple Discussion Forum.

I believe you are looking at the wrong menu. For the majority of Canon inkjet printers, you need to select the "Duplex Printing & Margin" menu to perform two-sided (duplex) printing. You do not use the "Layout" menu because it is not available, as you have seen.

If you do not have the "Duplex Printing & Margin" option in the print dialog menu then that could indicate a faulty installation of the Canon driver. Can you confirm which driver/version you installed.

The original driver that I had was "MX330 series Printer Driver Ver. 10.16.0.0", for Mac OS X CUPS. Canon support said this was the wrong one for my OS and had me delete those files and download "MX330 series Printer Driver Ver. 7.15.0", for Mac OS X. In both cases neither has the "Duplex Printing & Margin" option, though there is a Margin drop down. But "Layout" is where I have the grayed out "two-sided" option.

I also, deleted & installed the scanner driver, MX330 series Scanner Driver Ver. 14.9.0

Okay, I think the lack of the Duplex option in the menu could be due to this model not having a duplex unit. I had a look at a few Canon web sites and none of them indicate this machine has a duplex function. Do you know if you can copy double-sided? The specs quote the ADF can copy duplex but I wonder if this requires you to manually reinsert the paper in order to print onto the second side?

Also, as I said in the other reply, you do not use the Layout > Two Sided menu. The PIXMA drivers do not make use of this core menu - that is why it is grayed-out.

I guess from what you're saying I probably don't have the capability to duplex. I do have the ADF but I have to manually reinsert everything to do two-sided copying. Also, it's clearer to me about the "layout" menu. It's confusing to see it, which leads one to think the capability is there but just not turned on.
I have created a work around by creating custom print settings to print only the odd and even pages in the correct order to simplify manual two sided printing.
Thanks for your help.
