Safari and Japanese text

I currently work in Japan but require the use of both English and Japanese. For some reason though I cannot read the japanese on my ibook whenever I look at any mails from my hotmail acc. I have noticed the problem re-occur when viewing certain web sites in Japanese and also when I'm doing my work. The Japanese won't show its true form instead it uses a mixture of dots dashes etc.
Can anyone help me?

This sounds like a font issue. I handle some of the Mac load at Nintendo here in the states and we exchange a lot of work with Japan. Talk about platform hassles.

Tell me, what are you using to manage fonts on that iBook?
And can you also tell me where your fonts are stored please.
You may have to do some work here.

Do a search on helvetica and let me know how many and where they're at please.

I'll try to sort it out with you.

Cheers for the quick reply...

Anyway the font app. is the one in the ibook "Font Book".
The the fonts as i discovered ar stored in many places. I've never been able to get my head around the management of fonts. Why they are stored in 2 places to start off with is beyond me.
Anyway after the search I got about 13 or so places of Helvetica or Helvetica variant styles. Within System Folder/ fonts, also System/ font, System Library Fonts, The Japanese and English System 9 System folders/ fonts, Trash, and User directory too.

Mind boggling. If there is a way to move them to one place I'd be happy (The reason why i don't just yet is because Apple saw fit to have the 2 areas of fonts from the initial install.
I'd be even more happy to get the japanese text to read as well though.

Cheers

I am no expert, but I don't think it is a font problem specifically. I live in Japan and send/recieve email in both Japanese and English. The problems seemed to have started with the introduction of 10.4. If you want to send emails from your mac to keitai (cell phones) you have to change the text encoding to one of several options, depending on the cell's network. This is also a problem when sending mail to Japanese comp systems, but not as much.

Ever since I installed 10.4 I have had to manually change the text encoding for both Safari and for Mail every time I want to send or read a mail in Japanese. What text encoding system I change it to, depends on the situation. It is terribly frustrating. I know 3 or 4 other mac users with the same problem. It is a problem we did NOT have with 10.3 and earlier. I went to the Mac store in Shinsaibashi (Osaka) and their fix did not really repair the problem... anyone knows what is going on and why it is taking APPLE JAPAN so long to fix it?!?!

help....!

Patrick -- I assume you are mainly talking about Mail? I'm not aware of any change in the behavior of Safari that affects email via webmail. But the way Mail chooses default encodings for certain scripts did change between Panther and Tiger. Also Rich Text changed its meaning from .rtf to html, which also caused some issues because of bugs with certain receiving clients, especially Win Outlook and some webmail. See this note for some info on the default encoding question:

I don't know whether Apple has any plans to "fix" this behavior, which as far as I know is not "wrong," but can definitely be annoying.
