Force lock and screen off on iPhone

As a newbie with the iPhone, I wonder if one of you more experienced users can help me with a couple of things that I cannot seem to be able to do:

1. I want to be able to 'lock' my phone at times other than when the inbuilt timer states. Is there an application or combination of touches that allows this?

2. Similarly, can I also blank the screen at will, not when the time is up?

I know how to set this up to happen at pre-defined times, I just want to be able also to do it when I want to

Simplt press the sleep/wake button on the top right of the phone. This will turn the phone screen on if it is off and vice versa.

Take look at the buttons/switches on the top and side of the phone. This might also help... http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPhone_UserGuide.pdf

Thank you both for the above - that helps me with the blank the screen, but not the lock - can anyone help with forcing a lock on it?

1. No, what's there is what you get for the auto-lock settings. What time do you need?

2. As stated above pushing the button on the top, the sleep/wake button, will lock the iPhone and turn off the screen. You can then hit that button again or hit the home button to wake it back up.

You can't force the Passcode lock to be enabled separate from locking the screen unless you select immediately for "require Passcode after" for the Passcode lock settings.

The options for the Passcode lock being enabled automatically include immediately, or after one minute.

They are the same... pressing the Sleep button turns off the screen and locks the device. Note that you have to "slide to unlock" after pressing the Sleep button.

If you want the phone to have a passcode, that's additional to locking... Settings > General > Passcode Lock

The lock is engaged whenever the phone is put to sleep. On waking you will then have to slide the button/enter lock code to use the phone.

Thanks for all your help - the thing I want to be able to force is my passcode lock - I have set it up to happen automatically after a set amount of time, but I would like to be able to force it as times.

Is this possible?

Yes. Set your Passcode Lock to Immediately. After sliding to unlock, you'll always be presented with the requirement to enter your passcode.
