Problems with FujiFilm 2Gb XD card.

So yeah I've got a real annoying problem with my Fuji F30 camera, I'm using a 2GB type H Xd Fujifilm picture card. All works well on camera, no problems & taking great shots/videos which I can preview on the camera.

So I go to transfer the images to my PowerBook G4 (running OS X Leopard 10.5.6), I use a USB XD adaptor key, the images show up & copy across.

So the trouble starts when I go to open the images, firstly there is no preview although the files do retain their data size (i.e a 3.5 MB video I took on the camera still has its physical size of 3.5 MB).

I try to open the images in PREVIEW but just get a window with a question mark in it. I've even installed Finepix viewer but that doesn't recognize the images either. Photoshop gives an "invalid jpeg marker".

Anyone any ideas as to whats wrong?? any help one could give me would be very much appreciated.
Cheers
G

Try connecting the camera directly to the computer via its USB cable and transferring the images that way. If that works and the images can be opened OK, there's a problem with your reader or its USB cable. If you have the same problem when transferring images directly from the camera, try transferring them to a different computer and see whether that works properly. If you can get the pictures copied to a computer that can open them, try reformatting the card in the camera, using the camera's menu commands. Sometimes a faulty card format can cause problems similar to yours.

Note: Do NOT delete pictures from the card or reformat the card using your Mac — do those tasks only with the camera's menu commands. Editing the contents of a card with a Mac can sometimes screw up the card's directory so the camera doesn't read it or write to it properly, or at all. Much better to let the camera handle all changes to the card's contents.

Have you looked at the Fuji web site for support? Here's what's at http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digitalcameras/support/compatiwinmac.html:

- The Fuji software is compatible with OS X thru 10.4.10
- They have two USB drivers that will work with Leopard: SM-R1/R2 and DPC-UD1. DPC-R1 is compatible with 10.4.3
- Finepix viewer runs under Leopard
- Hyper-Utility software is compatible on OS X Tiger and earlier
Do you have the latest 1.02 F30 firmware loaded?

Have you looked over the Fuji support database at http://search.fujifilm.co.jp/support_e/digitalcamera/qanda/index.asp

I can download from Canon and Sony cameras, on OS X Tiger, with no issues, so the first place I'd look is towards a Fuji solution.

I have the F30, but do not use a card reader. This seems like a drive format issue. I was never able to get a PC card adapter to work with the 1GB xD cards. Also this camera does not have a USB mass storage mode, so the only reliable method for import I found was to use Apple Image Capture set to launch when I connect the camera via USB and power it up.

Nice one to everyone for the suggestions,

I acquired another XD picture card (128 MB) to test if it is the USB Card Reader that is faulty but it worked perfectly, so nothing wrong with the Card Reader. So still confused why its having trouble with the 2 GB card which works perfectly in the camera. I'm thinking a direct connection with a USB cable should solve the situation as someone already suggested, so will have to pick one up someplace.

kmac1036: The first post in this thread makes it plain that Garreth, the OP, has a card reader and is able to copy his photos to his Powerbook via the reader. His problem is that he can't open the pictures after transferring them, though the camera opens them just fine. That suggests to me that the pictures are corrupted during the transfer. So I've suggested that he transfer the pictures directly from the camera to the computer through the camera's USB cable, to get the card reader and its USB cable out of the process.

Under almost all circumstances, I agree that a card reader expedites and simplifies the transfer process. In this particular case, I'm recommending bypassing it for test purposes.

I didn't quote the OP, I quoted Louie which stated clearly that he was having trouble with his camera transfering files... I was answering louie as he had a response to my statement earlier in the thread. FYI 🙂

Well, no, I have no problem transferring directly from the camera. And while I haven't used a USB card reader at all, I have tried Sandisk PC card slot adapters for CF and xD cards, and they seem to have problems when larger than some size, such as 1GB (I forget what size this seems to occur at). No one on these forums seemed to have a solution; I gave up on readers and connect the camera directly to the USB. The Fuji F30 includes the special USB cable required.

Regarding card readers, I seem to recall some incompatibilities as 1GB xD were introduced - perhaps 2GB cards are also unrecognizable by some devices. There's also something different about the xD type M and H IIRC. I think my owner's manual warns about cards when 1GB was the maximum available.

I'm still unable to view images when transferred to my Powerbook G4, (they read fine on board the camera, using a type H 2GB Fuji Film XD picture card) the image files retain their data information, i.e a 2.9 MB file on camera still reads as a 2.9 MB file when transferred to the camera. The firmware on the F30 is 1.02. I am using a KAWAU USB Memory Adapter when transferring images to my powerbook G4. The USB adaptor reads an olympus 128 MB picture with card no problems at all.

I am going to resign and give in to the fact that there are problems with reading XC cards over 1GB. I am sure (its been mentioned already) when the camera is connected via a USB cable it should transfer the images just fine.

Thanks for all you help.
Cheers

Louie: SanDisk, despite being a major manufacturer of flash memory media, was inexplicably the last to produce card readers (including those in the PC Card format) that could handle cards of 1GB nd larger. In addition, there were severe problems reading all xD cards of all sizes on Macs for a while after Olympus and Fuji released that card format. I had such an awful time with the xD cards my daughter's Olympus camera used that we actually replaced the $300 camera with a different brand that uses SD cards; those have never given me any trouble at all. I suspect that if you bought a SanDisk xD-capable PCMCIA card reader today, it would read all your xD cards just fine. Of course if you're happy with what you're doing, no need to change — I just thought you might be interested in a little more info about the problem.

xD still hasn't caught on with anybody but Oly and Fuji and isn't available in sizes larger than 2GB, so I suspect it's going to fade out fast. SD seems to dominate the compact-camera market now.
