International HTML standards

Once I have read in this forum a nice comment about international standards for html documents. I think (but am not sure) it was written by iBod. The comment was made when answering a question of mine about encoding problems in Safari. I cannot find this (old?) thread in the forum. Would someone (say iBod) care to remind me about those standards and supplement it by some relevant web cites.

Edit: I can't find anything in my previous posts. Encoding issues sounds like an area Tom Gewecke is especially good at. Maybe you're thinking of him? 🙂

Pink Panther -- I don't know exactly what you are looking for, but I have often made reference to the fact that agreed html standards require web pages to tell browsers what encoding to use. When web authors forget this, the display can easily get botched.

Tom,
Need you help once again. The internet edition editor (of some newspaper) to whom I have sent the cite you recommended has found it "too professional...". This definitely puts a question mark on his professional skills, but does not help me, as a reader of this newspaper internet edition, to get a better html performance. I kindly ask you for other cites, if you happen to know, which deal 'less professinally' with international all-platform html standards.

How about asking them to run their site through the Validator?

Otherwise, a Google search on "html tutorial" should yield some less technical sites.

Here is a page of tips for making web sites Viewable with Any Browser. It is not a tutorial or html guide, so it shouldn't be "too professional" or even "too technical".

I have sent the "Validator" cite address (accompanied by the "Viewable with any Browser" address) to the internet edition editor of this newsletter I told you about. Hope somebody there will eventually read my email message, will appreciate your efforts, and will finally be ready to do something about it...
