Finder - Connect to Server via name or IP - Connection Failed Message
I have 5 ibooks connected to a PowerMac G5 via Airport Extreme all running 10.4.11. I reinstalled the OS on one of the computers with all of the updates. For some reason I am unable to connect to the server via Finder Go > Connect to Server > IP address (192.168.XX.XXX) like we do on all the others. I also tried using the Finder > Network > Server Name etc. Both ways I get Connection Failed - The server may not exist or is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again. I don't know how to check the ports so that might be the answer. Our database program can connect to the server like for syncing, I can print to a server connected via USB on the server, I can ping the IP successfully, etc. I searched for previous posts but could not find solution.
Yes. The IP number is always the same for everyone to connect as the server is assigned an internal IP #. In the previous post I meant to say printer - I can print to a printer connected to the server. I have Firewall turned off on all machines as we are behind a router with a firewall.
All four are checked on. This is identical to my laptop as well.
This was a clean reinstall from a HD failure. Uploaded from original CDs and then downloaded updates. So this is a new HD. Everything else seems to be running fine.
I am not sure. The firewall router is a Linksys BEFVP41 V2 supplied by our ISP. This is ...10.1 IP. MAC Add. Clone is disabled. DHCP address starts at .10.110 and we have 50 addresses above that. We are small so won't have more than 6-7 total. The AE is ...10.2.
No we never get to that point. Instead of getting the login/pw screen it gives me the connection failed yet I know the computer is connecting to the server since I can print and my db can sync directly with the server. Typically I one would get the login screen type your PW and then it will give 4 possible directories to mount.
I am not exactly sure how to turn this on. I did check on the Server under WorkGroup > Sharing for the public directory and AFP and SMB are turned on.
More info - The message about the server not existing is for afp://192... when I try smb://192...I get a different message - "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct" - this is before the login/pw screen. I also opened terminal and tried to connect using ssh bob@192... It gets to the password and then does not seem to accept the password. I went directly to the server and and am to login fine there under Bob's account.
