Resume File Transfer?

If a file transfer fails in the middle of it, can it be resumed from where it left off...? Thanks

Macbook Pro Mid 08, Mac OS X (10.5.6), Windows 7 (Bootcamp)

depends on how your sending the file transfer. as in what program you are using. If you are using the OS to do it then you most likely have to start over but for instance using aol instant messenger(AIM) will resume unfinished transfers
