Disable external mic.

Hey,

Yesterday I got an iPhone 3G, I'm really pleased with it so far, and I've only come across this one problem.

I want to use my iPhone instead of my iPod when I'm driving, so I've connected it to my car's AUX port with a standard jack to jack. I was also planning to use this as hands free, and the caller would be heard from the cars speakers, and I would use the iPhones built in mic. The sound output side works great but when I start the engine the iPhones mic cuts out, so I'm assuming that the iPhone thinks I've connected an external mic, which I havn't. Is there anyway I can stop the iPhone from trying to use an external mic, and just use external speakers?

Sorry, you can't use an AUX cable as a handsfree substitute.

You can use this adapter

It has a microphone and control button. The sound will still come out of the car's speakers.

uh, yes you can... i do it all the time.

when the iphone is plugged into an aux jack in a car the caller goes over the speakers and the mic on the phone works like the mic on the phone. i have no idea why the original poster's mic cuts out with the engine.

My aux cable doesn't work as handsfree. The caller doesn't go over my car speakers even though they can hear me.

hi.
i'm having the same problem and i can say that it worked for me... for some time (i could hear the caller on my car speakers and they could hear me). im not sure but it maybe that it worked fine before i connected the headset that comes in the box (with the mic). it seems that the iphone got stuck with that setting even if there's no external mic.
i really liked this feature and i want it back in my phone.

I corrected the problem turning the phone off and back on.

do that

...and then try turning on your car with the car stereo off, iphone unplugged.

THEN connect the iphone and then turn the stereo on.

What type of auxillary cable is it? We have two vehicles, and in one vehicle I connect it to the ear phone jack. The other vehicle I connect it to the bottom of the phone like you would to charge the phone. In neither case will making a phone call go out over the car's speakers.
